The Great Train Journey by Ruskin Bond

The fascination that a train kindles in a person with the grandeur in its appearance is a feeling everyone would have experienced from their childhood. The longing for the first train travel starts when a kid sees a train pass-by near their home or in a railway crossing and waves its hands - and the train never disappoints a passenger on his/her first train journey. Ruskin Bond's "The Great Train Journey" is a collection of short stories that have trains as the theme. 

The picturesque landscapes that unfold on either side of the train are beautifully put into words in some of the stories here. The stories which have kids as the central characters instil a sense of nostalgia and take us back in time to revisit our childhood. The stories written here reach both extremes - a busy railway station bustling with regular activity and a deserted railway station which has mysteries to be unearthed. The stories where the protagonist tries to uncover the mysteries behind deserted railway stations remind us the times when we had wondered about the same. The sight of a train whistling and storming out of a tunnel might leave the readers longing to experience it, especially those who haven't witnessed it standing at the foot of a tunnel.

Ruskin Bond's characters are nothing short of reality and his stories are mere reflection of the day-to-day happenings around us. A railway station is where people from all strata of the society are seen and there are times when that stratification temporarily vanishes with conversations that happen during train travel. The train journey, the co-travellers, the conversations, the vendors who keep moving along the length of the train back and forth and the happenings that keep the long journeys engaging are portrayed brilliantly here. 

Barring some repetitive themes, Ruskin Bond has given us a good collection of stories that will linger in our minds for a day or two. Few stories have something at the end that comes as a surprise and that makes this book a delightful read. 

Sidney Sheldon's "Nothing Lasts Forever"

"Nothing Lasts Forever" is a novel with three women as central characters who fight to survive in the male dominant medical profession. The three doctors undergo rigorous on-call schedule at the hospital with no work-life balance. They encounter male dominance, sexual harassment, life threatening blackmails when they stand up against the male doctors and hospital management. With each of them having a backstory and a past that might catch up with them anytime, the novel has enough scope for drama and suspense.

The novel starts off with a gripping courtroom drama in its prologue. The lives of the three women had taken a wild turn with one of them accused of murder, one of them dead and one of them held responsible for the possibility of the hospital shutting down. This intriguing suspense in the prologue gives the novel a perfect start. 

But, once the novel shifts away from the courtroom to the hospital, it dips in pace. There are too many minor characters that pass-by and serve no purpose to the storyline. The novel takes too long to be back to where it started and it fails to sustain the intensity all along. Despite a decent detective-style investigative portion at the end, the novel fails to connect primarily due to too many subplots.

What could have been an engaging courtroom drama is let down by the predictable and wavering nature of the storyline. Considering the novel was written in 1994, it could have been accepted by the audience then. Sidney Sheldon's lacklustre outing which might test your patience.

Why were women enslaved? (பெண் ஏன் அடிமையானாள்?)

Periyar’s “Why were women enslaved?” is a insightful perspective into the unfair and unequal treatment women receive in our society. Periyar lists down the aspects and ideologies that curtail the freedom of women and in turn lead to a woman’s life always being dependent on the male counterpart.

 

The word "கற்பு" (Karpu) in Tamil has been used to attach a purity tag to a woman in terms of virginity and chastity. The same tag doesn’t apply to a man and is free to have any number of extramarital affairs. Periyar voices out for gender equality in this context with arguments that break down how Indian society has used this purity to ensure women remain as slaves to the chauvinistic males. 

Periyar talks about financial independence for women in this book. To bring this to action, he had promoted the campaign for amendment of legal acts to grant women the right to inherit ancestral property which was confined to male heirs at that point of time. This would ensure a woman’s freedom from the clutches of the household and her dependence on her husband. 

The book also emphasises on divorce, remarriage and widow remarriage to counter the enslavement of women that stems out of the institution of marriage and its moral obligations. There had been practices in Hindu religion to confine widows inside the houses and forcefully suppress their desires and feelings - in fact there have been castes who go to the extent of shaving a widow’s head for the rest of their life. This would occur no matter how old is the widow, considering child marriages were abundant during that time. The stats and figures outlined in this book about the number of widows in 1920s (some were 1 year-old babies) are shocking and present to us the pitiful state of our society 100 years back. 

Periyar puts forth his view on legalisation of prostitution and recognising sex workers with dignity instead of showing contempt towards them and branding them as immoral. He draws parallel between prostitution and other professions which involve dishonesty but considered with high regard. His blunt and honest approach towards injustice that women suffer at the hands of men and the society they live in is what makes this an impactful read. 

The fallacious inveterate beliefs that confine women are dealt with uncompromisingly forthright counter arguments, no matter which religion or ideology preaches them. The book gives a fitting end by stating the enslavement of women can end only when unnecessary pride in the masculinity of the opposite gender withers away or gets abolished.

There are some extreme views put forth in this book, which are debatable, but one cannot ignore  or brush aside the facts emphasized here. Periyar's ideology on women empowerment needs to be spread to the masses. 

Remember that these thoughts were put together in words 100 years back during a time when they would have been received with the most savage malice.

There is a reason why Periyar can never be converted into a harmless icon - his simplified writings and the undeniable truth in them have the power to reach the masses and enlighten them for a better future.

I read this book in Tamil, but wanted to write about it in English so that it reaches readers outside TN as well.

பட்டுக்கோட்டை பிரபாகரின் "கண்டுபிடியுங்கள்"  அவரது குறுநாவல்கள் சிலவற்றின் தொகுப்பு.

கண்டுபிடியுங்கள்

காணாமல் போன மகளை கண்டுபிடித்து தருமாறு ஒரு துப்பறியும் நிறுவனத்தை நாடுகிறார் நகைக் கடை உரிமையாளர் ஒருவர். கடத்தலா? கொலையா? காதலால் வீட்டை விட்டு ஓட்டமா? என்று அப்பெண் மாயமானதன் மர்மம் கதையை உயிர்ப்புடன் நகர்த்துகிறது. இடையிடையே வரும் கதாப்பாத்திரஙகளின் மர்மமான நடவடிக்கைகளும், அவர்கள் மீது எழும் சந்தேகங்களும் “suspense thriller”-களுக்கான template. முடிவில் வரும் திருப்பம் எதிர்பாராதது எனினும், அது வாசகர்களிடம் கலவையான விமர்சனங்களை பெறலாம். 

தயவு செய்து

நடுத்தர வர்க்க குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பள்ளி மாணவி நடுரோட்டில் பாலியல் சீண்டலுக்கு ஆளாகிறாள். அந்த சம்பவத்திற்கு பிறகு அந்த குடும்பத்தின் எதிர்வினையும், அதனால் வரும் நெருக்கடியும், அதிகாரமும் பணபலமும் அவர்கள் மீது செலுத்தும் ஆதிக்கமும் உரையாடல்கள் மூலம் கதையில் சொல்லப்படுகின்றன. பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்ணுக்கு உளவியல் ரீதியாக ஏற்படும் பயம், அதன் விளைவாய் அவள் தந்தை அந்த சூழ்நிலைக்கு தேடும் தீர்வுகளும் சமூக எதார்த்தத்தை பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன. ஆனால் அந்த எதார்த்தம் சரி தானா என கேள்வி எழுகிறது.

டேக் நம்பர் 2

விறுவிறுப்பான suspense நிறைந்த thriller கதை இது. சின்ன சந்தர்ப்பம் அமைந்தாலும் பணத்தை கரக்க பிசிரில்லாமல் திட்டம் போட்டு மோசடி செய்யும் மனிதர்கள் நிறைந்த உலகமே இந்த கதையின் களம். கதையில் வரும் எதிர்பாராத திருப்பங்களாலும், அடுத்தடுத்து வரும் உச்சக்கட்டக் காட்சிகளாலும் கதையில் விறுவிறுப்புக்கு பஞ்சமில்லை. Template ஆன ஆட்கடத்தல் கதையாக ஆரம்பித்தாலும், அதை தொடர்ந்து வரும் சம்பவங்கள் இக்கதையை cliche என்று சொல்ல முடியாதபடி காப்பாற்றுகின்றன.

சந்திரன் சாட்சியாக

பெண்கள் வேலைக்கு செல்லுமிடத்தில் அனுபவிக்கும் பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தல்களை பலர் மௌனத்துடன் கடந்து செல்வர். ஆனால் சிலர் அதை எதிர்க்க நினைக்கும் போது அவர்களுக்கு வரும் சிக்கல்கள், அவர்களை பற்றிய சமூகத்தின் கண்ணோட்டம், சட்ட ரீதியான சாட்சியங்கள் ஆகியவை பெரும்பாலும் அவர்களை பலவீனப்படுத்துகின்றன. அப்படிப்பட்ட சூழ்நிலையில் சிக்கும் ஒரு பெண்ணிண் கதை இது. மேம்போக்காக இந்த பிரச்சினையை அணுகி, கதையின் ஓட்டத்துக்காக commercial elements-ஐ புகுத்தி, நம்பகத்தன்மை சிறிதும் இல்லாத climax-ல் முடிகிறது இக்கதை. 

புதிய குதிரை-7-710

நகைக் கடைக் கொள்ளை - பணயமாக ஒரு பெண் ஊழியர் - கொள்ளையர்களை தேடும் அதிகாரி - வழக்கமான thriller கதை. கதை எந்த தருணத்திலும் உச்சக்கட்டத்தை அடையாமல் flat ஆக பயணிக்கிறது. விறுவிறுப்பாக அமைய கதையின் அமைப்பும், கதையின் போக்கும் கைக்கொடுக்கவில்லை. 

மதிப்புக்குரிய ரகசியம்

ஒரு decent conspiracy thriller ஆக துவங்கும் இக்கதை, அதன் பின் வழக்கமான thriller கதைகளுக்கான வரம்புக்குள் சிக்கிக் கொள்கிறது. Conspiracy பிரதானமாக இல்லாமல், அதை தடுப்பதற்காக கையாளப்படும் யுக்திகளை மட்டும் நம்பி பயணிக்கிறது. நல்ல conspiracy thriller கதைக்கான அமசங்கள் அமைந்தாலும், predictable ஆக நகர்ந்து தோற்கிறது இக்கதை.

... ஆகையால் இறந்தாள்

ஒரு பெண் கொலை செய்யப்படுகிறாள். காவல்துறை விசாரணையில் முன்னாள் காதலன், கள்ளக் காதலன் உட்பட நான்கு பேரின்பால் சந்தேகம் வருகிறது. இந்த மர்மத்தை சுற்றி கட்டமைக்கப்படும் வழக்கமான whodunit கதை Predictable climax-ல் முடிகிறது. 

மிஸ் வந்தனாவின் வாக்குமூலம் 

காதலர்கள் இருவர் வீட்டில் சம்மதம் பெற முடியாமல் ஊரைவிட்டு ஓடிப் போகின்றனர். இருவருக்கும் அங்கே காத்திருக்கும் முடிவுகளும், எதிர்பாராத  திருப்பங்களும் இக்கதையை பரபரப்பு குறையாமல் நகர்த்தி செல்கின்றன. Epilogue-ல் வரும் climax இக்கதையை Decent thriller ஆக நிறைவு செய்கிறது.

நடுவில் ஒரு நங்கை

பார்த்தவுடன் காதலில் ஆரம்பித்து முக்கோண காதல் கதையாய் மாறி பழிவாங்கும் படலத்தில் முடிகிறது இந்த கதை. மற்றுமொரு சுமாரான treatment கொண்ட கதை. 

Murder mystery, Family drama, Suspense thriller என கமர்ஷியல் கலவையாய் அமைகிறது இந்த தொகுப்பு. விமர்சனங்கள் பல இன்று இருந்தாலும், இக்கதைகள் எழுதப்பட்ட காலத்தில் வெகுஜன ஏற்பை பெற்றிருக்கலாம். மொத்தத்தில் வாசகர்களுக்கான "timepass entertainment” தந்து வெகு மக்களிடம் சென்றடையும் "pulp fiction" கதைகளின் தொகுப்பு இது. 

கி. இராஜநாராயணனின் "கோபல்ல கிராமம்"

கி.ரா. எழுதிய "கோபல்ல கிராமம்" நிசாம் ஆட்சியின் பிடியிலிருந்து தப்பிக்க புலம்பெயரும் ஒரு தெலுங்கு பேசும் நாயக்கர் குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றிய கதை. புலம்பெயர்ந்து தெற்கே வரும் அந்த குடும்பம் கரிசல் காட்டை எரித்து "கோபல்லா" எனும் கிராமத்தை உருவாக்குகின்றனர்.

நாயக்கர் குடும்பம் புலம்பெயர்ந்த காரணம், புலம்பெயர அவர்கள் மேற்கொண்ட நீண்ட பயணம், வழியில் அவர்கள் சந்தித்த மனிதர்கள் ஆகியவையே பிரதானமாய் இந்நாவலில் சிறுசிறு நிகழ்வுகளாக தொகுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இதன் நடுவே ஒரு கொலை குற்றமும் இடம்பெறுகிறது - ஆனால் நாவலின் போக்கில் அது பின்னுக்குத் தள்ளப்படுகிறது. நாவலின் இறுதியில் அந்த கொலை குற்றமும், கொலையாளிக்கான தண்டனையும் முற்று பெற்றாலும் கிளைக் கதைகளின் ஆதிக்கத்தால் அக்கதை துண்டிக்கப்பட்டு தாக்கம் ஏதும் ஏற்படுத்தவில்லை. 

19-ம் நூற்றாண்டின் இடையில், ஆங்கிலேய ஆட்சியின் ஆரம்பக் காலத்தில், கிராம முக்கியஸ்தர்களாக இருக்கும் சில நாயக்கர்கள் எவ்வாறு விக்டோரியா ராணியின் ஆட்சியை ஏற்கிறார்கள் என்பதை விவரிக்கிறது இந்நாவல். விக்டோரியா மகாராணியை இராணி மங்கம்மாவுடன் ஒப்பிட்டு ஏற்பதும், பின்னர் அந்த மனநிலை மாறி கிராமத்தில் சுதந்திர வேட்கை துளிர் விடுவதுடன் முடிகிறது இந்நாவல். 

கிராமம் உருவாக காட்டை தீக்கு இரையாக்கும் முறை, தீவட்டி கொள்ளையர்களின் திருடும் முறை - அவர்களை சமாளிக்க நாயக்கர்கள் கையாளும் திட்டங்கள், வெட்டுக்கிளி படையெடுப்பு ஆகியவை பற்றிய வர்ணனை அந்த காட்சிகளை நம் கண்முன் விரிக்கிறது. 

நிசாம் ஆட்சியில் உயர்சாதி நாயக்கர் குடும்ப பெண்ணைக் கண்டு மயங்கும் இசுலாமிய மன்னன் அவளை மாட்டுக்கறி சாப்பிடச் சொல்வது போன்ற பொதுமைப்படுத்தும் காட்சிகள், குற்றவாளிக்கு தரப்படும் கொடுமையான கழுவில் ஏற்றும் தண்டனையை ஏற்க மறுக்கும் மனது மொத்த கிராமத்தில் ஒரு இராமபக்தனிடம் மட்டும் இருப்பதாக காட்சிப்படுத்துதல் ஆகியவை எதார்த்தமாக அமையாமல் திணிக்கப்படுகின்றன. 

கதைக்கான களமிருந்தும் தொடர்ச்சியான கதைப் போக்கில்லாமல் தொகுக்கப்பட்ட நிகழ்வுகளை மட்டும் பிராதான படுத்தியதால் இந்நாவல் நிறைவான வாசிப்பாக அமையவில்லை. 

Dr. Ambedkar Death Anniversary 2022

One news or the other surfaces everyday about the discrimination of Dalits and other scheduled castes by the caste Hindus and the hierarchically dominant castes. The restless and tense situation that engulfs the society in such happenings stems out of the unnecessary pride that the dominant castes hold and the unjust and unfair privileges they get from the caste system. 

Social freedom has remained a necessity in Indian societies for long and attaining that can be achieved only with the relentless upholding of Dr. Ambedkar’s principles and writings.

One can pelt stones at his statues and confine them behind bars. But, there is no confinement for his principles and writings. There might be attempts to rob his revolutionary theory of its substance and convert him into a harmless icon, every attempt at it should be curtailed by propagating his principles and educating the masses about what he stood against.

The “The A.B.C. Murders” by Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie’s “The A.B.C. murders” is part of the series in which her famous fictional detective character Hercule Poirot appears. A serial killer out on a killing spree chooses his victims alphabetically and announces the place and time of the crime beforehand in a letter sent to Hercule Poirot. Poirot is bent upon cracking the pattern of these murders and prevent the next from happening. 

The novel starts off as a template serial killer mystery with much of the proceedings adding to the suspense quotient behind the identity of the murderer and the selection of his victims. But, the novel takes an interesting turn when the killer inadvertently leaves behind a trail. With Poirot and the officials closing in on the killer’s identity, the suspense in the second half still lingers on the motive behind the killings. With the motive kept under wraps until the very end, the novel sustains the readers’ attention but the revelation in the climax might garner mixed reviews.

The psychological angle of Poirot’s investigation is a great addition to the storyline. Though the novel lacks consistent high points, it does give a proper closure by unravelling all the knots in a timely and convincing way. A gripping novel with a climax that might be a miss-or-hit. 

Nevertheless, this is a quick read.  

அப்புசாமியின் கலர் டி.வி.

பாக்கியம் ராமசாமியின் "அப்புசாமியின் கலர் டி.வி." முழுக்க முழுக்க நகைச்சுவை காட்சிகளும் வசனங்களும் நிறைந்த ஒரு குறுநாவல். சென்னை தமிழ் பேசும் அப்புசாமி, சரளமாக ஆங்கிலம் பேசும் சீதாப்பாட்டி என அட்டகாசமான combo-வாக வரும் வயதான தம்பதியினரே இந்நாவலின் பிரதானமான கதாப்பாத்திரங்கள். இந்த முரண்பாடான இரு மனிதர்கள் அவர்களுக்குள் நடக்கும் வாக்குவதங்களிலும், சண்டைகளிலும் அவற்றிலிருந்து தப்பிக்க செய்யும் சமாளிப்புகளிலும் Tom and Jerry ஆக மிளிர்கின்றனர்.

சென்னை தமிழில் வரும் வசனங்களால் பல இடங்களில் சாதாரண ஜோக்குகள் கூட ரசிக்கும்படியாக அமைகின்றன. கதையின் போக்கில் வரும் சின்ன சின்ன suspense-களும், அவை உடைபடும் தருணங்களும் நம்மை கண்கள் நனைய சிரிக்க வைக்கின்றன.  

சில கதாப்பாத்திரங்களும், ஆங்காங்கே வரும் வசனங்களும் மட்டும் சமூகத்தின் பொதுமைப்படுத்தும் பார்வையை சுமந்து இக்கதைக்கு பின்னடைவாக இருக்கின்றன. 

மொத்தத்தில் கலகலப்பான light moments கொண்ட quick read “அப்புசாமியின் கலர் டி.வி.”.

அசோகமித்ரனின் "கரைந்த நிழல்கள்"

வண்ணமையமான சினிமா உலகத்தின் வெளிப்புற தோற்றம் பார்வையாளனுக்கும் ரசிகனுக்கும் சினிமா துறையை பற்றி ஒரு கவர்ச்சிகரமான பிம்பத்தை இன்றும் ஏற்படுத்துகிறது. ஆனால், சினிமா துறையில் உழலும் ஊழியர்களின் இருளடைந்த வாழ்வும், அவர்களின் வலியும் தான் எதார்த்தமே. 

அசோகமித்ரனின் "கரைந்த நிழல்கள்" சினிமா துறையில் பல்வேறு மட்டங்களில் இருக்கும் மனிதர்களைப் பற்றிய கதை. படத் தயாரிப்பாளர், உதவி இயக்குனர், புரடக்க்ஷன் மேனேஜர், கோஷ்டி நடன பெண்கள், ஓட்டுநர்கள், செட் அஸிஸ்டன்ட், மற்ற கடைநிலை ஊழியர்கள் என பல மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கையையும், பசியையும், அவமானங்களையும், பொருளாதார நிலையையும் அப்பட்டமாக பதிவு செய்யும் நாவல். 

கோடி கணக்கில் பணம் புரளும் தயாரிப்பாளரின் சகல வசதிகள் கொண்ட வீட்டை விவரிக்கும் அதே சமயம் அவரின் நிம்மதியற்ற வாழ்வும், சிதைவுற்ற குடும்ப நிலையும், நிச்சயமற்ற வியாபாரமும் தரும் மன அழுத்தத்தையும் உள்ளது உள்ளபடி சொல்கிறது இந்நாவல். ஒரு தயாரிப்பு நிறுவனத்தின் வீழ்ச்சியால் வாழ்வாதாரம் இழக்கும் ஊழியர்கள்,  பின்னாளில் பிச்சை எடுக்கும் அந்த நிறுவனத்தின் சிறந்த புரடக்க்ஷன் மேனேஜர் போன்றோரின் நிற்கதியான நிலை நம் கண்முன் விரிகிறது. அந்த நிறுவனத்தின் அலுவலகம் காலி செய்யப்படும்போது, அவர்கள் கடைசியாக எடுத்த காட்சியின் கிளாப் போர்ட்டை ஒரு கடைநிலை ஊழியன் உரிமையாக பிடுங்கிக் கொள்ளும் காட்சி சிறிதும் melodramatic ஆக இல்லாமல் அசோகமித்ரனின் எழுத்தில் வெளிப்படுகிறது. இந்நாவல் 1960-களின் சினிமா பற்றிய விவரணையானாலும், தங்கள் பசியை தேநீரின் சூட்டிலும், அவமானங்களை சிகரெட்டின் கசப்பான புகையிலும் போக்கிக் கொள்ளும் உதவி இயக்குநர்களின் சித்தரிப்பு இன்றும் பொருந்தும்.  

சினிமாவில் உழலும் மனிதர்களின் தோல்வியை பற்றி பேசும் மிகச் சிறந்த நாவல் "கரைந்த நிழல்கள்". நாவலில் வரும் எந்த கதாப்பாத்திரத்திலும் தன் கருத்தை திணிக்க முற்படாமல், அவர்களின் செயல்களை மதிப்பிடாமல், அவர்களின் இயல்பை மட்டும் கூறி நமக்கு அவர்களின் உலகத்தை அறிமுகம் செய்கிறார் அசோகமித்ரன்.

திரு. தகழி சிவசங்கரம் எழுதிய "தோட்டியின் மகன்" - தமிழில் சுந்தர ராமசாமி

சமுதாயத்தில் நிலவும் சாதியக் கண்ணோட்டத்தையும், இழி தொழில் என தொழில்களை வகைப்படுத்தும் பார்வையையும் ஒரு நகர சுத்தித் தொழிலாளியின் வாழ்க்கையின் மூலம் பிரதிபலிக்கிறது திரு. தகழி சிவசங்கரம் எழுதிய "தோட்டியின் மகன்".

"தோட்டி மவன் தோட்டியா தான் ஆவனுமா?" என்ற கேள்வி இந்த நாவல் முழுக்க ஒலிக்கிறது. அது பிறப்பின் அடிப்படையில் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வு கற்பிக்கும் வர்ணாசிரம முறைக்கு எதிரான குரல். தனது அடுத்தத் தலைமுறையை தோட்டி தொழிலில் ஈடுபடுத்தாமல் படிக்க வைக்க முற்படும் சுடலைமுத்துவை பற்றிய கதை இது. 

புரட்சிகர சிந்தனையாயினும், சுடலைமுத்துவை புரட்சிகர நாயகனாக சித்தரிக்கவில்லை - தன் மகனின் எதிர்காலத்தைப் பற்றிய அவனது கனவை நிறைவேற்றிக் கொள்ள சுயநலமாக சிந்திக்கும் ஒரு சாதாரண மனிதனாகவே முன்னிருத்துகிறது இந்நாவல். அவனது சுயநலத்தினால் அவன் மனைவி என்னென்ன கட்டுப்பாடுகளுக்கு ஆளாகிறாள் என குடும்பச் சூழலில் நடக்கும் ஆணாதிக்கத்தை காட்டும் பல காட்சிகள் அமைகின்றன. அதிகார மையமான முனிசிபல் சேர்மன், ஓவர்சீயரின் துணையோடு தோட்டிகளுக்கான சங்கம் அமைவதை தடுக்க சுடலைமுத்துவை ஒரு கருவியாக பயன்படுத்துகிறார். தான் சார்ந்த சமூகத்தின் முன்னேற்றத்தை விட தன் தனிமனித முன்னேற்றத்தை முக்கியமானதாகக் கொள்ளும் சுயநலவாதியான சுடலைமுத்து மற்ற தோட்டிகளுக்கும், நண்பனுக்கும் துரோகம் இழைக்கிறான். இது சமூகச் சூழலில் அதிகார வர்க்கம் அடித்தட்டு மக்களிடம் காட்டும் ஒடுக்குமுறையின் நிதர்சனமான பிரதிபலிப்பு.

தான் கழிவறை சுத்தம் செய்யும் வீடுகளில் வசிக்கும் உயர்சாதியினரின் பழக்கவழக்கங்களை பின்பற்ற ஆரம்பித்து பணம் சேமிக்கக் கற்றுக்கொள்கிறான் சுடலைமுத்து. அவன் வாழ்வின் பொருளாதர நிலை உயர்ந்தும், அவனின் சாதி அடையாளம் மட்டும் அவனையும் அவன் மகனையும் துரத்துகிறது. அதனால் அவன் தோட்டி தொழிலை ஒரு கட்டத்தில் விட்டுவிட்டு வேறு தொழிலுக்கு மாற எத்தனிக்கிறான். அவன் மயானக் காவலாளியாக மாறுகிறான். அதுவே அவனுக்கு கிடைக்கும் பதவி உயர்வு மற்றும் அவனது சமூக நிலையின் உயர்வு. 

சாதிய படிநிலையின் அடுக்குகளும், அவற்றின் ஆழமும் கடக்க முடியாத மதில்களை ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோரின் முன் விரிக்கின்றன. சுடலைமுத்து போன்ற மனிதன் அவற்றை உடைக்க முற்படும் போது அவனுக்கு இருக்கும் மலைப்பை மீறி அந்த பாதையில் பயணிக்க வைப்பது அவனுக்கு இருக்கும் காரணம். முடிவில்லா அந்த பயணத்தையும், அதில் அவன் அனுபவிக்கும் வலிகளையும், சமூகச் சிக்கல்களையும் விவரிக்கிறது இந்நாவல்.

“The Book of Cold Cases” by Simone St. James

An unsolved serial killer case for twenty years, a wealthy woman Beth who was acquitted in the trial, unanimous belief among the residents of the town that Beth was guilty, a part time blogger Shea who is bent upon unravelling the mysteries behind the serial killings form an interesting premise to this novel.

Beth agrees for an interview with Shea 20 years after the acquittal. Why Beth chose Shea? Why is she talking now after all these years? With the first half of the novel packed with intriguing suspense and interesting turn of events that keep unfolding seamlessly, it is a compelling page-turner. The pace of the novel slows down in the second half because of the climactic revelation at the end of the first half.

The non-linear narrative that shifts back and forth in the timeline establishing Beth’s past, Shea’s past and the happenings during the serial killings keeps the reader engrossed. The paranormal events around Beth’s house is a force-fit, but the writer makes use of it to unravel some of the mysteries. The parallels drawn between Shea and Beth from the start till the end establishes the connect between the two central characters on how they get along despite being on the opposite sides.

Even with an interesting premise, convincingly established timeline, well written character sketches, the novel falls short with the limited scope for any big revelations in the second half.

அசோகமித்ரனின் "தண்ணீர்"

அசோகமித்ரனின் "தண்ணீர்" சமூகத்தில் வெவ்வேறு சூழ்நிலைகளால் வாழ்வில் தனிமைப்படுத்தப்பட்ட மூன்று பெண்களின் கதை. 

கனவுகளை துரத்திக்கொண்டு, சினிமா வாய்ப்புத் தேடும் பெண்ணை சினிமா உலகம் எவ்வாறு நடத்தும் என்பதற்கு சாட்சியாய் ஜமுனா. ராணுவத்திலிருக்கும் கணவனைப் பிரிந்து தனது வேலைக்காக தன் மகனையும் உறவினரிடம் விட்டுவிட்டு தனிமையில் வாழும் ஜமுனாவின் தங்கை சாயா. குடும்ப சூழ்நிலையால் நோயாளி கணவனையும், குடும்ப செலவுகளையும், சுமைகளையும் வேறு வழியின்றி தாங்கும் டீச்சரம்மா. 

கற்பு என்ற நிலையை பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும் சம்பந்தப்படுத்தும் நிர்ப்பந்தக் கற்புமுறையால் ஜமுனா சமூகத்தில் சந்திக்கும் சிக்கல்கள், அதன் விளைவாய் அவள் எடுக்கும் இடைக்கால முடிவுகள் பலவீனமானவை. ஜமுனாவின் போக்கு பிடிக்காமலும், கணவரின் இடமாற்றை எதிர்நோக்கியும் சாயா எடுக்கும் முடிவுகள் சுயநலமானவை. குழந்தையின்மையை பெண்ணின் குறையாக மட்டுமே கணிக்கும் சமூகத்தின் பார்வையால் டீச்சரம்மாவின் வாழ்வு பரிதாபமானது. 

இம்மூவரும் நகரத்தில் நிலவும் தண்ணீர் தட்டுப்பாட்டை அவரவர் தேவைக்கேற்ப சமாளிக்க முற்படுகின்றனர். தண்ணீர் கிடைக்கும் பொருட்டு அவர்கள் பெறும் அனுபவங்களின் மூலம் அவர்களுள் நிகழும் உளவியல் மாற்றங்களும், அதன் விளைவாய் அவர்கள் வாழ்வில் எடுக்கும் தெளிவான முடிவுகளும் கதையை உயிர்ப்புடன் நகர்த்திச் செல்கிறது. 

தண்ணீர் கிடைக்க தெரு மக்கள் படும் பாடு, தெரு ஓர குழாயடி சண்டை, அரசாங்கத்தின் அலட்சியம், கிசுகிசுக்களின் களமாக மாறும் குழாயடி என பிண்ணனியில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்கள் நடுத்தர மக்களின் வாழ்க்கையை பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன.

"The Silent Patient" by Alex Michaelides

"The Silent Patient" is a psychological thriller which revolves around a woman Alicia who remains silent after being accused of murdering her husband. Her silence is unperturbed even when declared guilty by the court of law for her husband's murder. With her state of mind, the court sends her to therapy but she chooses to remain silent throughout the psychological treatment. Theo, a psychotherapist is bent upon breaking her silence and uncovering the mystery behind her silence. 

With each central character having a bad past or a disturbed childhood, the novel takes more time establishing them. The non-linear narrative builds up the suspense and propels the novel to a satisfying end.

The analogy to Greek tragedy "Alcestis" fits the storyline perfectly and the events that unfold towards the climax justify the same. 

Though the novel picks up pace midway with interesting turn of events, there are happenings which are added to increase the mystery quotient but do not get a proper closure. 

A decent thriller with its own share of shortcomings!

கவிஞர் யுகபாரதியின் "இசை அல்லது இளையராஜா"

கவிஞர் யுகபாரதியின் "இசை அல்லது இளையராஜா" எனும் நூல் இளையராஜா அவர்களின் இசையை புதியதோர் கண்ணோட்டத்தில் அணுகுகிறது. இளையராஜாவின் இசைப் புலமையையும், திரையிசைப் பாடல்களிலும், பிண்ணணி இசையிலும் அவர் நிகழ்த்தும் அற்புதங்களையும் பல இயக்குனர்களின் மேடைப் பேச்சுகளின் மூலம் அறிந்திருப்போம். 

இளையராஜா அவர்கள் பாடல் வரிகளுக்கு தரும் முக்கியத்துவத்தையும், அவரது இசையில் கேட்கும் வார்த்தைகளின் தெளிவையும் பல பாடல்களில் உணர்ந்திருப்போம். அதன் காரணம் இளையராஜாவுக்கு இருந்த மொழிப் புலமை. அந்த மொழிப் புலமையையே இந்நூல் எடுத்துக்காட்டுக்களுடன் கையாள்கிறது. 

தமிழ் வார்த்தைகளின் சந்தத்தை வைத்துக்கொண்டு அவர் கட்டமைத்த இசை வடிவத்தையும், அதை சிரமமில்லாமல் கிராமத்தின் கடைக்கோடி ரசிகனுக்கும் சென்றடையும் வகையில் கடத்தியதையும் நமக்கு பரிச்சயமான பாடல்களைக் கொண்டு விவரிக்கிறார் கவிஞர். 

பாடலாசிரியராக இளையராஜாவின் வார்த்தை பிரயோகம், மற்ற பாடலாசிரியர்களின் வரிகளில் அர்த்தம் பிரழாமல் செய்யும் மாற்றங்கள், அதில் அவர் புகுத்தும் எளிமை ஆகியவற்றை கவிஞர் அவர் ரசித்த பாடல்களிலிருந்தும், அவருடன் பணியாற்றிய அனுபவத்திலிருந்தும் பகிர்கிறார். 

எளிய மக்களிடம் தனது இசைப் புலமையைக் காட்டி மிரள வைக்காது, அவர்கள் தேவைக்கேற்றவாறு, கதை நடக்கும் நிலப்பரப்பின் வட்டார மொழியின் வாயிலாக உணர்வுகளை கடத்துவதே இளையராஜாவின் அசாத்திய திறமை.

ஒரு பாடலாசிரியர் ஒரு இசையமைப்பாளரின் மொழிப் புலமையை பற்றி எழுதுவது இளையராஜா திரையிசையில் நிகழ்த்திய புரட்சிக்கும், யுகபாரதியின் திறந்த மனதிற்கும் - தெளிவான சிந்தனைக்கும் சான்று.

திரு. டி. செல்வராஜ் எழுதிய "தோல்"

டி. செல்வராஜ் எழுதிய "தோல்" எனும் நாவல் தோல் பதனிடும் தொழிலாளர்களின் வாழ்வியலை பதிவு செய்து, நம்மை அவர்களின் உலகுக்கு இழுத்துச் செல்கிறது. அடிமை வாழ்விலிருந்து விடுபட அதிகார வர்க்கத்திற்கு எதிராகவும், சாதிய அடக்குமுறைக்கு எதிராகவும் அறவழி போராட்டங்கள் மூலமாக எவ்வாறு தொழிலாளர்கள் தங்கள் அடிப்படை உரிமைகளை மீட்டெடுக்கின்றனர் என்பதே இந்நாவலின் மையக்கரு.

பல்வேறு ஊர்களிலிருந்து பிழைப்புக்காக வந்த மக்கள் முறி எழுதி கொடுத்து தோல் ஷாப்புகளில் சேர்வது வழக்கம். வாங்கிய கடனையும் அடைக்க முடியாமல், கூலி அனைத்தும் அன்றாட தேவைகளுக்கும், சாராயத்துக்கும் தீரும் நிலையில் வட்டியும் கட்ட முடியாமல், அடிமைகளாக மரணிப்பதே இவர்களின் வாழ்க்கை. சாராயம் அவர்கள் உடல் வலியைப் போக்கிக்கொள்ள அத்தியாவசியமாகிறது. தோல் பதனிடும் முறையால் அவர்கள் நோயுற்று மரணிப்பதும் சகஜமான ஒன்று. ஊருக்குள் மாடு செத்து விழுந்தால் வந்து தூக்க கீழ்சாதியினரே பணிக்கப்படுவர். தோல் ஷாப்புத் தொழிலாளர்களும் அதே சாதியினர் தான். வர்க்க பேதம், சாதிய அடக்குமுறை இரண்டையும் இம்மக்கள் அனுபவிக்கும் அவலம். தீண்டாமையின் உச்சமாக காற்று கூட சேரியின் வாயிலாக போகாமல் ஊருக்குள் வருமளவுக்கான திட்டமிடல் ஊரையும் சேரியையும் பிரிப்பதில் இருந்திருக்கிறது.

தோல் ஷாப் ஒன்றில் அபலைப் பெண்ணை பாலியல் ரீதியாக துன்புறுத்தும் முதலாளியின் மைத்துனனை ஓசேப்பு எனும் தொழிலாளி தாக்குகிறான். முதலாளியின் அடியாட்கள் அவனைத் தேட ஆரம்பிக்க, வெளியூருக்கு தப்பிச்  செல்ல எத்தனித்து ஓசேப்பு இரயில் நிலையத்தின் பொது கழிப்பறையில் மறைகிறான். பராமரிப்பில்லாத அந்த கழிவறையில் தேங்கி நிற்கும் மலத்தை சாக்கடையில் இருந்து வெளிவந்த பன்றி சுவைக்கிறது. அந்த காட்சியும், அந்த நாற்றமும் அவனை வெளியே துரத்தியிருக்க வேண்டும். அது தான் வாசகனின் எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பும். ஆனால், மலக்கழிவின் வாடை குடலைப் பிடுங்கினாலும், தோல் ஷாப்பின் ரத்தம் கலந்த நிணக்கழிவின் அழுகல் வாடையை விட மோசமாக அவனுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. இந்த ஒரு காட்சி தோல் ஷாப்பு வேலையின் கடினத்தையும், கொடூரத்தையும் விளக்கி நம்மை கலங்கடிக்கிறது. 

அடியாட்களிடம் பிடிபடும் ஓசேப்புக்கு ஆதரவாக வரும் கிருத்துவ பாதிரியாருடன் சேர்ந்து தொழிலாளர்கள் திரள்வதே தங்கள் முதலாளிகளுக்கெதிராக அவர்கள் எழுப்பும் முதல் குரல். தோல் ஷாப்பில் நடக்கும் உழைப்புச் சுரண்டலுக்கும், பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தலுக்கும் எதிராக குரல் கொடுக்கும் தொழிலாளர்களை ஒன்றிணைக்க தொழிற்சங்க அமைப்புகள் உருவாகின்றன. அவை அவர்களின் ஊதிய உயர்வு, முறி ரத்து ஆகியவையோடு அவர்கள் சுயமரியாதையையும் மீட்டெடுக்க உதவுகின்றன. அனைவரும் ஒரு அமைப்பாய் அதிகார அத்துமீறல்களையும் மீறி முதலாளித்துவத்தையும், சாதிய முரணையும் சட்டத்தின் துணை நின்று எவ்வாறு எதிர்கொள்கின்றனர் என்பதே நாவல் நெடுக பரவிக் கிடக்கிறது.

உயர்சாதி வக்கீல் சங்கரன், சுப்புவாடன் போன்ற துப்புரவு பணியாளர்கள், ஓசேப்பு போன்ற தோல் ஷாப் பணியாளர்கள் சங்கத்தில் இணைந்த பிறகு அவர்களுள் நிகழும் உளவியல் ரீதியான மாற்றங்களை பற்றிய விவரணை தொழிற்சங்கங்களின் பலத்தை பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. அனைவரையும் சமமாய் பார்த்தும் சேரி தெருவின் சகதிக்காடான நிலை, தோல் பதனிடும் மற்றும் மலம் அள்ளும் பணியாளர்கள் மீது வீசும் நாற்றம், அவர்களின் அழுக்குத் தோற்றம் அனைத்துக்கும் பழக சங்கரனுக்கு காலம் தேவைப்டுகிறது. சுப்புவாடன் போன்ற துப்புரவு தொழிலாளர்கள் தங்கள் சாதியின் விளைவாக வரும் தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மையிலிருந்து வெளிவர முடியாமல் சமூகத்தில் நிலவும் சாதிய கட்டமைப்பு தடுக்கிறது. ஆயிரமாயிரம் வருடங்களாக இவ்விருவர் நடுவே உடைபடாத மதில்களை "தோழர்" என்ற ஒற்றைச் சொல் உடைத்தெரிகிறது. 

நாவலில் தனிமனித நாயக சாகசங்கள் ஏதும் இடம்பெறாது, உண்மைக்கு நெருக்கமாக, உணர்வு பூர்வமாக அமைகிறது கதையின் போக்கு. தொழிலாளர்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட அமைப்பே நாவலின் நாயகன், அமைப்புக்கான கொள்கையின் துணையோடு நடத்தப்படும் சட்ட போராட்டங்களே சாகசங்கள்.

பொதுவுடைமை இயக்கங்களின் தேவையை உணர்த்தும் இந்நாவல் பல இடங்களில் மாக்ஸிம் கார்கியின் "தாய்" நாவலை நினைவூட்டுகிறது.

சிவசங்கரியின் "பாலங்கள்"

சிவசங்கரியின் "பாலங்கள்" வெவ்வேறு காலக்கட்டங்களில் வாழும் மூன்று பெண்களை முதன்மை கதாப்பாத்திரங்களாக கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. ஒவ்வொரு காலக்கட்டத்திலும் பெண்களின் மனநிலையையும், அவர்களின் குடும்ப சூழலையும், பெண்கள் மீது சமூகம் விதிக்கும் கட்டுப்பாடுகளையும், உடை, உணவு, கல்வி, வேலைவாய்ப்பு, விருப்பம், திருமணம் போன்றவற்றில் அவர்களுக்கிருந்த சுதந்திரத்தின் எல்லையையும் இந்த மூன்று பெண்களின் வாயிலாக பதிவு செய்கிறது. நீண்ட கால மூடநம்பிக்கைகள், சம்பிரதாயங்கள், சாதிய வழக்கங்கள் நிறுவிச் செல்லும் பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தை, அதன் தீவிரத்தை அந்தந்த காலக்கட்டத்தின் சமூக எதார்த்தத்தோடு விவரிக்கிறது இந்நாவல்.

திரு.அஜயன் பாலாவின் "நாயகன்" வரிசையில் சே குவாரா பற்றிய புத்தகம் இன்று படித்தேன். 

சே குவாராவின் வாழ்வில் நிகழ்ந்த முக்கிய தருணங்களை திரட்டி இந்நூல் ஒரு சிறிய வாழ்க்கைத் தொகுப்பாக அமைந்திருக்கிறது. சகல வசதிகளுடன் உயர் வகுப்பை சார்ந்த குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்தாலும், அவர் எவ்வாறு உழைக்கும் மக்களுக்கான புரட்சியாளராய் உருவெடுத்தார் என்று உளவியல் ரீதியாகவும், அவருடைய தனிப்பட்ட அனுபவங்களின் மூலமாகவும் விவரிக்கிறது இந்நூல்.

சே குவாரா யார் என்று தெரியாமலே அவரது படம் போட்ட டீசர்ட்டை அணிந்தவர்களில் நானும் ஒருவன் - ஒரு சிவப்பு நிற டீசர்ட் அணிந்து அலைந்தவன் தான். அந்த டீசர்ட்டில் ஓவியமாகத் தோன்றிய சே அவர்கள் அதிகாரத்திற்கு எதிரான குரலின் அடையாளம் என்றும், அமெரிக்க ஏகாதிபத்தியத்தியத்தை எதிர்க்கும் குறியீடு என்றும் நான் அறிந்ததில்லை. அப்படிப்பட்ட சே குவாராவை இந்த நூல் எனக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்தது. 

அஜயன் பாலா அவர்களின் எழுத்தில் உள்ள எளிமையும், வரலாற்றுப் பக்கங்களை விவரிக்கும் போது கொண்டு வரும் சுவாரஸ்யமும் நாயகன் வரிசை மூலம் பல ஆளுமைகளை மக்களிடம் எளிதாய் சேர்க்கும்.

Lucy Foley’s “The Guest List”

Lucy Foley‘s “The Guest List” is a taut thriller which keeps the readers guessing until the very end. With a group of guests assembled at a high profile wedding in a remote island, the proceedings take a wild turn when a waitress suspects she has seen a body along the shoreline.

The novel shifts back and forth in time to cover the events that happened on the day before the wedding and on the wedding day. This non-linear writing is a great strength to the novel despite being abrupt at certain places. The events unfold before us from each character’s perspective and each character has a backstory which is seamlessly interwoven into the plot. 

We have the formulaic murder mysteries which start with the murder victim and build up to the revelation of the murderer and the motive in the climax. This novel stands apart and keeps the victim as well under wraps and leaves the readers  in intriguing suspense. 

Verity by Colleen Hoover

Lowen, a writer, who is almost broke, lands up with the best offer in her lifetime - to finish the series of best-selling author Verity. Lowen stumbles upon a draft of Verity’s autobiography during the research for the novel and it unearths more mysteries surrounding Verity’s medical condition and the death of Verity’s daughters. As these mysteries unfold, the suspense builds up and the novel keeps us engrossed.

Verity, the protagonist’s character arc is well written and the story depends heavily on this character to move forward. Jeremy, Verity’s husband is a weakly written character despite being the character that is linked to all high points in the novel and travels throughout the length of the novel. Lowen, as a writer who has a secret past and her fear for public / social appearances is a better written character. 

The climactic ending to the novel is great but the novel has its share of shortcomings in the build up to the climax where a lot of unnecessary scenes disturb the flow. The negative shade of Verity is brilliantly written and propels the narration forward. But the wrongdoings of Jeremy and Lowen are silenced at most parts and end up being justified and we wonder whether that was intentional or inadvertent.

Despite the shortcomings, this served just as the satisfactory read to come out of the reading slump. 

Dr. Ambedkar Birth Anniversary 2022 - Equality day

The struggle for Indian independence is taught in schools - the history of independence movement and the sacrifice of the leaders is well-known to the students.

Similarly, the struggle for social freedom in India has a long history. This struggle against the social structure of caste needs to be reiterated in the history books. The ignorance and preconceived notion around reservation needs to be cleared. The thought of taking pride in one's caste needs to be deemed unjust and how this pride impacts the mental health of fellow human beings from lower castes needs to be pointed out. The tense situation that engulfs a society whenever there is a caste feud has its roots in ignorance and the unnecessary pride.

Dr. Ambedkar - the undeniable force that broke the caste shackles of the society to attain social freedom needs a special place in the school history books. His exhaustive research work on annihilation of caste is what the future society needs. 

Let us follow his footsteps and work together for the ideal casteless society built on Equality, Fraternity and Liberty.

An individual who stood by his principles even when facing the gallows. An avid reader who spent most of his short lived life in the midst of books. A revolutionary who stood against imperialism and made the voice of socialism reverberate across the country. An atheist who believed in rationalism and questioned the fallacy of age old beliefs. An extremist who valued human life and never believed in bloodshed unlike the pistol brandishing angry young man image portrayed by many. A freedom fighter who could have been the socialist icon India needed if not for the unjust trial and death sentence. 

A personality who should be studied and celebrated more!

சில கதைகள் வாசகனை கதைக்களத்தில் பார்வையாளனாகவோ, கதையின் ஓர் பாத்திரமாகவோ உலாவ விட்டு வெற்றி பெறுவன. இன்னும் சில கதைகளின் வெற்றி - வாழ்வில் நடக்கும் நிகழ்வுகளை வைத்து நினைவிலிருந்து உயிர் பெறுவது தான். அப்படிப்பட்ட நிகழ்வுகளின் தொகுப்பாய் "கதாவிலாசம்".

பல எழுத்தாளர்களை எனக்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்தியதோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல், அன்றாடம் நடக்கும் நிகழ்வுகளையும், நகர வாழ்க்கையையும், பெண்களின் நிலையையும் எதார்த்தமாய் பதிவு செய்கிறார் எஸ்.இராமகிருஷ்ணன்.

ஆனால் பெண் அடிமைத் தனத்தைத் தவறெனச் சுட்டிக் காட்டாமல், பெண்ணைத் தலைப்பில் மட்டும் பிரதானப் படுத்தித் தட்டிக் கழிக்கும் மற்றுமோர் நாவல்.

கடலோர மீனவர்களின் சாகச வாழ்வையும், வாழ்க்கை நெறியையும், வாழ்க்கை நெறி விதிக்கும் கட்டுப்பாடுகளையும், சாதி-மதம் போதிக்கும் மூடநம்பிக்கைகளை கண்மூடித்தனமாய் நம்பி, சமூகத்திற்காக அவற்றை ஏற்றும் நடக்கும் மனிதர்களின் எளிய வாழ்வின் எதார்த்த உலகத்தைக் காட்சிப்படுத்தும் நாவல்.

கற்பு என்ற நிலையை பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும் சம்பந்தப்படுத்தும் நிர்ப்பந்தக் கற்புமுறையால், ஒரு பெண் தன்னைத் தன் சமூகத்தின் அவச்சொல்லில் இருந்து காக்க, தன் உணர்வுகளை புதைத்து, தனது வாழ்வை கற்பனையானத் தவவாழ்வாய் மாற்றப் படும் போராட்டம் தான் இந்த "செம்மீன்" சொல்லும் கதை‌.

Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None"

Ten different people invited to an island by their acquaintances arrive only to find out that they were lured here by an unknown host. Everyone has a secret past and unearthing which will have them guilty of a crime. They get murdered one by one for this secret they hold and there is no way to escape death as the island loses contact with the mainland due to a heavy storm. There is increasing tension as each one suspects the other.

With this interesting premise, the novel tries to hold the attention of the readers once the characters are settled. But, the build up to the revelation is slow and takes ample time considering the proceedings need to take place in a closed repetitive atmosphere. A solid climax that unfolds in the epilogue makes up for it and makes this novel a satisfying read.

ஸ்டாலின் ராஜாங்கம் எழுதிய "தமிழ் சினிமா - புனைவில் இயங்கும் சமூகம்"

திரு. ஸ்டாலின் ராஜாங்கம் எழுதிய இப்புத்தகம் தமிழ் சினிமாவில் சாதிய ரீதியான சித்தரிப்புகளைப் பற்றிய விரிவான ஒரு ஆய்வு. தமிழ் சினிமாவில் நீண்ட காலமாக படமாக்கபடும் வெளிப்படையான மற்றும் மறைமுகமான சாதி ரீதியான காட்சிகளை மேற்கோள் காட்டி அவற்றை சமூக சூழலோடு பொருத்திப் பார்க்கிறது இந்த ஆய்வு.

சுய சாதி விமர்சனமின்றி எடுக்கப்படும் இப்படங்களில் ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோரின் நிலை உண்மைக்குப் புறம்பாகவோ வசதிக்கேற்ப மொளனப்படுத்தியோ கடத்திச் செல்வதும் வழக்கம் என எடுத்துக்காட்டுகளுடன் வரும் கட்டுரைகள் பார்வையாளனாக நம்மையும், நம் ரசனையையும் சுய மதிப்பீடு செய்யத் தூண்டுகின்றன. தியேட்டர்களுக்குச் சென்று விசிலடித்து, ஆர்ப்பரித்து, சில்லறைகளை சிதறவிட்டுப் பார்த்த காட்சிகளுக்குப் பின்னால் சுய சாதி பெருமையும், சாதிய குறியீடுகளும் இருப்பதை எழுத்தாளர் விளக்கி அந்தக் காட்சிகளில் வரும் நாயக சாகசங்களை, நரம்பு புடைக்கப் பேசும் வசனங்களை அடித்து உடைத்தெறிகிறார்.

இப்புத்தகத்தில் வரும் கட்டுரைகளில் ஆகச் சிறந்த கட்டுரை வடிவேலுவின் நகைச்சுவை பற்றிய பார்வை. அதிகார அடையாளங்கள் மற்றும் சாதிய அமைப்பு மீது எவ்வாறு வடிவேலுவின் நகைச்சுவைக் காட்சிகள் தாக்குதல் செய்கின்றன என்பதை ஆராய்கிறது. படத்தில் வரும் சாகச காட்சிகள் நம்பகத்தன்மையோடும், அதே சமயம் நகைச்சுவைக் காட்சிகள் நம்ப முடியாதவையாகவும் பார்க்கும் மனநிலை இங்கே உருவாகியிருப்பது அபத்தம் என தெள்ளத் தெளிவாய் காட்டுகிறது. உண்மையில் நகைச்சுவைக் காட்சிகளில் வரும் பாத்திரங்களே உண்மையான, எதார்த்தத்திற்கு நெருக்கமான பாத்திரங்கள். அதை வடிவேலு தன் எதார்த்தமான உடல்மொழியாலும், வட்டார வழக்காலும் திரையில் சிரமமின்றி கடத்துகிறார். இதை மீண்டும் நமக்கு வசனங்களையும், காட்சிகளையும் எடுத்துக்காட்டி நினைவூட்டுகிறது இக்கட்டுரை. இக்கருத்தை அப்பட்டமாக பிரதிபலிக்கும் தாமோ நாகபூஷனம் என்பவர் வரைந்த அட்டைப்படம் அட்டகாசம்.

இறுதியாக அண்மையில் வந்த தலித்துகளின் வாழ்வை பதிவு செய்து அவர்கள் குரலாய் ஒலித்த சில படங்களை விமர்சனத்திற்கு உட்படுத்தி, அதே சமயம் அவை சாதிய சினிமாக்களில் இருந்து எவ்வாறு விலகி நிற்கின்றன என்பதைக் காட்டுகிறார்.

Harlan Coben's "Tell No One"

A pediatrician who is a grieving husband after his wife's abduction and murder, a serial killer, a witness, a mysterious email to the pediatrician after 8 years impersonating his wife and a rich man whose legacy is in danger. This premise catapults this novel into an intriguing suspense at the very beginning. The build up to the revelations that ensues is interesting and convincing. A flawless narration and a decent climax keeps the readers engrossed till the end.

அஜயன் பாலாவின் "நாயகன் பெரியார்"

திரு. அஜயன் பாலா எழுதிய "நாயகன் பெரியார்" நூலை Amazon Kindle-ல் இன்று படித்தேன்.

பெரியாரின் வாழ்க்கையில் நடந்த முக்கிய நிகழ்வுகளைத் திரட்டி ஒரு சிறு வாழ்க்கை வரலாறாக இந்நூலைத் தொகுத்திருக்கிறார். பெரியாரின் பொது வாழ்க்கையோடு நில்லாமல் அவரது சொந்த வாழ்க்கையையும், அதில் அவர் சந்தித்த இழப்புகளையும், உளவியல் ரீதியான அழுத்தங்களையும், அதிலிருந்து எவ்வாறு மீண்டு வந்தார் என்பதையும் விளக்குகிறது இந்நூல்.

பெரியார் அவர்கள் காந்தியக் கொள்கைகள் மீது கொண்ட ஈர்ப்பால் காங்கிரஸில் இணைந்தாலும், பின்னாளில் நாட்டு விடுதலையை விட சமூக விடுதலையே பிரதானமென காங்கிரஸில் இருந்து விலகி சுயமரியாதை இயக்கம் துவங்கியதின் காரணத்தையும் விரிவாக எடுத்துரைக்கிறார் எழுத்தாளர். அதில் பெரியாரின் கொள்கைப் பிடிப்பு தெளிவாய் தெரிந்தது.

பெரியார் முன்னெடுத்த போராட்டங்களில் அவரது மனைவி நாகம்மையார், சகோதரி கண்ணம்மா ஆகியோரின் பங்களிப்பே பெரியார் பெண் சுதந்திரத்தை கொள்கைப் பரப்புரைகளோடு நிறுத்தாமல், அதை சொந்த வாழ்விலும் கடைப்பிடிப்பவர் என்பதற்கு சான்று. இவ்விரு பெண்களின் போராட்ட குணமும் இந்நூலில் இடம்பெறுகிறது.

தேர்தல் அரசியலில் இருந்து விலகி, சாதிய ஒழிப்பு, பெண் விடுதலை, பகுத்தறிவு கருத்துக்களை மக்களிடம் கொண்டு சேர்த்து இச்சமூகத்தை சுயமரியாதை மிக்கச் சமூகமாய் மாற்றிய தலைவனுக்கு இந்நூல் ஒரு "tribute". 

"Bhagat Singh - The Eternal Rebel" by Prof. Malvinder Jit Singh

This book written by Prof. Malvinder Jit Singh is a biography of Bhagat Singh that captures in detail the various events of his life - both personal and political.

Though he has a cult following in India at present, there is often an image of a pistol brandishing angry young man portrayed on him. This book reveals the true nature of Bhagat Singh. It talks about how he valued human lives and never believed in bloodshed, despite being an extremist in the freedom struggle.

His contrasting transformation into a communist hailing from a family with Arya Samaj connection shows the independent intellect in him. The biography also puts forth Bhagat Singh as a voracious reader. It explains how some of his favourite reads had an impact on his thinking and the activities he was involved in.

This book details how Bhagat Singh was drawn towards communism - he and his colleagues wanted to organize the peasants, labourers and working class across the nation to raise voice against the imperialists. This is evident when Bhagat Singh and BK Dutt involved themselves in the assembly bombing incident as a sign of protest against the passing of trade dispute bill which imposed restrictions on workers from organizing and conducting strikes for their demands.

The sufferings of Bhagat Singh and his colleagues in jail, and the unjust treatment they received in the judicial proceedings are touched upon here; the resistance they had shown, by withstanding the pain, in order to make their stand is astonishing.

Some of the articles written by Bhagat Singh in newspapers, books and his jail notebook also find a place in this book. One of the articles on untouchables written by him indicates that Bhagat Singh opposed not just the social hierarchy but also the caste hierarchy. This particular article resonates Dr. Ambedkar's take on the unjust hierarchical structure prevalent in Indian society.
