“1st Case” by James Patterson & Chris Tebbetts

Angela, a techie pursuing her Masters at MIT gets kicked out for illegally hacking into the computer of her fellow student. Just when Angela thinks her career had gone downhill, she gets the opportunity to work with FBI as an intern. She is thrown right away into a case which involves multiple homicide in a household. With the brutality of the crime scene and the sympathy she feels for the young girl who is a victim, she struggles to cope up with the psychological challenge that the job poses. Nevertheless, she is determined not to give up.

When she is handed over an evidence - the mobile phone of the victim, she realises where her expertise is needed. She stumbles upon an application that might lead her to the killer, but the application does not trace back to its origin. The mystery thickens when she learns the case at hand is not an isolated one. She is on a hunt to uncover the identity of the hacker and serial killer who is always one step ahead.

The premise is interesting but it is let down by weak writing. The happenings in the novel are incoherent at times and the predictability makes this novel less engaging after the first half. It makes us wonder if this novel was intended to be a murder mystery or a cyber crime thriller. The novel falls flat as it tries to be both. The lack of consistent high points makes this an average read. 

வண்ணநிலவனின் "கம்பா நதி"

நதிக்கரை மக்களை கதையின் மாந்தர்களாக்கி அவர்களின் வாழ்வையும், மனநிலையையும் பதிவு செய்யும் "கம்பா நதி", அவர்கள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் தனிமனித பிரச்சினைகள், சமூகச் சிக்கல்கள் மூலம் சமூக எதார்த்தவாதத்தை நிறுவிச் செல்கிறது.

திருநெல்வேலியை கதையின் களமாக்கி அந்த நிலப்பரப்பை தன் எழுத்தின் மூலம் நம் கண்முன் கொண்டுவருகிறார் வண்ணநிலவன். அங்கே உள்ள மத வழிப்பாட்டுத் தளங்கள், நதிக்கரை, குறுகிய தெருக்கள், பேரூந்து வழித்தடங்கள், கடைத்தெரு, வீடுகளின் அமைப்பு ஆகியவற்றின் துள்ளியமான வர்ணனையுடன் வட்டார வழக்கில் வரும் உரையாடல்களை சேர்த்து உள்ளதை உள்ளவாரே சித்தரிக்கிறார். சினிமாவும் அவர்களின் வாழ்வின் அங்கமாய் மாறிப் போனதையும் காண்கிறோம்.

குடும்ப உறவுகளின் விரிசல்களையும், உடைந்த குடும்பங்களில் பெண்களின் நிலையையும், அவர்கள் சந்திக்கும் பொருளாதார நெருக்கடியும், தனிமனித ஒழுக்கமின்றி சுயநலத்துடன் அலையும் சங்கரன் பிள்ளையின் குடும்பம் காட்டுகிறது. சமூக அமைப்பு விதிக்கும் நெறி பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும் பொருந்துவதை சரி எனும் ஏற்கும் பொதுவான மனநிலை பெண்களிடம் இருப்பதை சிவகாமி, மரகதம் கதாப்பாத்திரங்கள் பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன. சிவகாமி தன் விருப்பு வெறுப்புகளை மறைத்து குடும்பச் சூழலை சரிகட்ட வேலைக்குச் செல்கிறாள். மரகதமோ "ஆண் என்றால் அப்படித்தான்" என்று ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் நிலையில் இருக்கிறாள். 

வேலையில்லா திண்டாட்டத்தின் தீவிரத்தையும், சிபாரிசில்லாமல் வேலைதேடும் போராட்டத்தையும்  கோமதி, பாப்பையா கதாப்பாத்திரங்களின் காத்திருப்பு பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. பலமுறை ஆட்தேர்வில் ஏமாற்றமடையும் பாப்பையா மூடநம்பிக்கைகளை துணைக்குத் தேடி அதிலும் ஏமாறுகிறான். பாப்பையா இறுதியில் திடீரெனக் கிட்டும் ராணுவ வாய்ப்பை ஏற்கிறான். கோமதியோ தன் விருப்பம் கேட்காமல் அமையும் திருமண ஏற்பாட்டுக்கு மௌனமாக சம்மதிக்கிறாள். இங்கேயும் கூட வேலையின்மையின் அடுத்தக்கட்டம் ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் வேறு வேறாக அமைகிறது. சமகால அரசியல் சூழல், அரசு அலுவலகங்களின் ஆட்தேர்வு முறை, மனிதர்கள் மூடநம்பிக்கைகளில் தஞ்சம் அடையும் வழக்கம் ஆகியவை கேள்விக்குள்ளாகின்றன.

இதைத்தவிர சமூகத்தின் சாதிய மனநிலை, அரசு அதிகாரிகளின் அதிகார வரம்புமீறல் ஆகியவையும் உள்ளது உள்ளபடி பேசப்படுகின்றன. 

மொழிநடையில் மிளிரும் இந்நாவல் அதிகமான கதாப்பாத்திரங்களை அறிமுகப்படுத்தி ஆங்காங்கே கிளைக்கதைகளில் சிக்கிக்கொள்கிறது. அதையும் மீறி தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்த தவரவில்லை.

சி.சு. செல்லப்பாவின் "வாடிவாசல்”

சி.சு. செல்லப்பாவின் "வாடிவாசல்" தமிழரின் வீர விளையாட்டான ஜல்லிக்கட்டை மையமாக கொண்ட குறுநாவல். கடந்த சில வருடங்களாக தொலைக்காட்சிகளிலும், சமூக வலைதளங்களிலும் அலங்காநல்லூர் ஜல்லிக்கட்டின் நேரலை வந்துவிட்டது. அதற்கு முன், மறுநாள் செய்தித்தாள்களும், இரவு நேர செய்திகளும் மட்டுமே ஜல்லிக்கட்டு பற்றிய வர்ணனையை நம்மிடம் வழங்கின. இந்த வர்ணனைகளும், ஜல்லிக்கட்டு பற்றிய கதைகளும் நம்மிடையே அந்த விளையாட்டை நேரில் பார்வையிட வேண்டும் எனும் ஆவலை ஒரு கட்டத்தில் தூண்டியிருக்கக்கூடும். சி.சு. செல்லப்பா அவர்களின் எழுத்தில் அந்த பார்வையாளனின் அனுபவத்தை தருகிறது இந்நாவல். 

களத்தில் மாடு அணையும் வீரர்களின் தயார் நிலை, மிருக வெறியுடன் சீறி வரும் காளைகளின் வகைகள், அவற்றின் பலம்-பலவீனம், மாடு வெளிவரும் குறுகிய பாதையான திட்டிவாசலின் அமைப்பு, முக்கிய பிரமுகர்களுக்கான மேடை அமைப்பு, வீரர்கள் கையாளும் யுக்தி, காளையின் எதிர்பாரா அசைவுகளை சமாளிக்கும் அவர்களின் சாமர்த்தியம் ஆகியவற்றை பற்றிய நுட்பமான விவரணை இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. 

சமூகத்தின் சாதியக் கட்டமைப்பின் பிரதிபலிப்பாய் ஜல்லிக்கட்டு களத்தில் ஒரே சாதிக்குள் நிலவும் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வுகளை சுட்டிக்காட்டுகிறது இந்நாவல். அதிகாரம் மற்றும் சாதிய ஆதிக்கத்தின் அடையாளமாய் வரும் ஜமீன்தார் - சாதிய அமைப்பு மற்றும் வர்கக பேதம் தரும் தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மையின் அடையாளமாய் வரும் பிச்சி இவர்களிடையே நிகழும் உரையாடல் மிக நுட்பமாய் சமூகத்தின் நிலையை பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. 

ஜமீன்தாரின் காரி எனும் காளையை வென்ற வீரனே இல்லை என்ற நிலையில் பிச்சி காரியை எதிர்த்து களத்தில் நிற்கிறான். மற்ற மாடு அணைபவர்கள் காரியின் போக்கு அறிந்து அஞ்சி விலகி நிற்கின்றனர். ஆனால் பிச்சிக்கோ காரியை எதிர்க்க காரணம் இருக்கிறது - அதனுடன் அவனுக்கு இருக்கும் கடந்த கால தொடர்பு. பிச்சி - காரி மோதலை களத்தின் பரபரப்புடன் சி.சு.செல்லப்பாவின் எழுத்து வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது. 

ஜல்லிக்கட்டை பிரதானமாக கொண்டு பயணிக்கும் இந்நாவல் கிராமங்களில் நிலவும் கடவுள் வழிபாடு, சாதிய பெருமை, கிராம மக்களிடையே தோன்றும் இனம்புரியா பாசம் ஆகியவற்றையும் பேசுகிறது. 

வெற்றிமாறன் இயக்கத்தில் திரைப்படமாக உருவாகும் இந்நாவல் இதே தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தினால் வெற்றி தான்.

The “The A.B.C. Murders” by Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie’s “The A.B.C. murders” is part of the series in which her famous fictional detective character Hercule Poirot appears. A serial killer out on a killing spree chooses his victims alphabetically and announces the place and time of the crime beforehand in a letter sent to Hercule Poirot. Poirot is bent upon cracking the pattern of these murders and prevent the next from happening. 

The novel starts off as a template serial killer mystery with much of the proceedings adding to the suspense quotient behind the identity of the murderer and the selection of his victims. But, the novel takes an interesting turn when the killer inadvertently leaves behind a trail. With Poirot and the officials closing in on the killer’s identity, the suspense in the second half still lingers on the motive behind the killings. With the motive kept under wraps until the very end, the novel sustains the readers’ attention but the revelation in the climax might garner mixed reviews.

The psychological angle of Poirot’s investigation is a great addition to the storyline. Though the novel lacks consistent high points, it does give a proper closure by unravelling all the knots in a timely and convincing way. A gripping novel with a climax that might be a miss-or-hit. 

Nevertheless, this is a quick read.  

அப்புசாமியின் கலர் டி.வி.

பாக்கியம் ராமசாமியின் "அப்புசாமியின் கலர் டி.வி." முழுக்க முழுக்க நகைச்சுவை காட்சிகளும் வசனங்களும் நிறைந்த ஒரு குறுநாவல். சென்னை தமிழ் பேசும் அப்புசாமி, சரளமாக ஆங்கிலம் பேசும் சீதாப்பாட்டி என அட்டகாசமான combo-வாக வரும் வயதான தம்பதியினரே இந்நாவலின் பிரதானமான கதாப்பாத்திரங்கள். இந்த முரண்பாடான இரு மனிதர்கள் அவர்களுக்குள் நடக்கும் வாக்குவதங்களிலும், சண்டைகளிலும் அவற்றிலிருந்து தப்பிக்க செய்யும் சமாளிப்புகளிலும் Tom and Jerry ஆக மிளிர்கின்றனர்.

சென்னை தமிழில் வரும் வசனங்களால் பல இடங்களில் சாதாரண ஜோக்குகள் கூட ரசிக்கும்படியாக அமைகின்றன. கதையின் போக்கில் வரும் சின்ன சின்ன suspense-களும், அவை உடைபடும் தருணங்களும் நம்மை கண்கள் நனைய சிரிக்க வைக்கின்றன.  

சில கதாப்பாத்திரங்களும், ஆங்காங்கே வரும் வசனங்களும் மட்டும் சமூகத்தின் பொதுமைப்படுத்தும் பார்வையை சுமந்து இக்கதைக்கு பின்னடைவாக இருக்கின்றன. 

மொத்தத்தில் கலகலப்பான light moments கொண்ட quick read “அப்புசாமியின் கலர் டி.வி.”.

அசோகமித்ரனின் "கரைந்த நிழல்கள்"

வண்ணமையமான சினிமா உலகத்தின் வெளிப்புற தோற்றம் பார்வையாளனுக்கும் ரசிகனுக்கும் சினிமா துறையை பற்றி ஒரு கவர்ச்சிகரமான பிம்பத்தை இன்றும் ஏற்படுத்துகிறது. ஆனால், சினிமா துறையில் உழலும் ஊழியர்களின் இருளடைந்த வாழ்வும், அவர்களின் வலியும் தான் எதார்த்தமே. 

அசோகமித்ரனின் "கரைந்த நிழல்கள்" சினிமா துறையில் பல்வேறு மட்டங்களில் இருக்கும் மனிதர்களைப் பற்றிய கதை. படத் தயாரிப்பாளர், உதவி இயக்குனர், புரடக்க்ஷன் மேனேஜர், கோஷ்டி நடன பெண்கள், ஓட்டுநர்கள், செட் அஸிஸ்டன்ட், மற்ற கடைநிலை ஊழியர்கள் என பல மனிதர்களின் வாழ்க்கையையும், பசியையும், அவமானங்களையும், பொருளாதார நிலையையும் அப்பட்டமாக பதிவு செய்யும் நாவல். 

கோடி கணக்கில் பணம் புரளும் தயாரிப்பாளரின் சகல வசதிகள் கொண்ட வீட்டை விவரிக்கும் அதே சமயம் அவரின் நிம்மதியற்ற வாழ்வும், சிதைவுற்ற குடும்ப நிலையும், நிச்சயமற்ற வியாபாரமும் தரும் மன அழுத்தத்தையும் உள்ளது உள்ளபடி சொல்கிறது இந்நாவல். ஒரு தயாரிப்பு நிறுவனத்தின் வீழ்ச்சியால் வாழ்வாதாரம் இழக்கும் ஊழியர்கள்,  பின்னாளில் பிச்சை எடுக்கும் அந்த நிறுவனத்தின் சிறந்த புரடக்க்ஷன் மேனேஜர் போன்றோரின் நிற்கதியான நிலை நம் கண்முன் விரிகிறது. அந்த நிறுவனத்தின் அலுவலகம் காலி செய்யப்படும்போது, அவர்கள் கடைசியாக எடுத்த காட்சியின் கிளாப் போர்ட்டை ஒரு கடைநிலை ஊழியன் உரிமையாக பிடுங்கிக் கொள்ளும் காட்சி சிறிதும் melodramatic ஆக இல்லாமல் அசோகமித்ரனின் எழுத்தில் வெளிப்படுகிறது. இந்நாவல் 1960-களின் சினிமா பற்றிய விவரணையானாலும், தங்கள் பசியை தேநீரின் சூட்டிலும், அவமானங்களை சிகரெட்டின் கசப்பான புகையிலும் போக்கிக் கொள்ளும் உதவி இயக்குநர்களின் சித்தரிப்பு இன்றும் பொருந்தும்.  

சினிமாவில் உழலும் மனிதர்களின் தோல்வியை பற்றி பேசும் மிகச் சிறந்த நாவல் "கரைந்த நிழல்கள்". நாவலில் வரும் எந்த கதாப்பாத்திரத்திலும் தன் கருத்தை திணிக்க முற்படாமல், அவர்களின் செயல்களை மதிப்பிடாமல், அவர்களின் இயல்பை மட்டும் கூறி நமக்கு அவர்களின் உலகத்தை அறிமுகம் செய்கிறார் அசோகமித்ரன்.

“The Book of Cold Cases” by Simone St. James

An unsolved serial killer case for twenty years, a wealthy woman Beth who was acquitted in the trial, unanimous belief among the residents of the town that Beth was guilty, a part time blogger Shea who is bent upon unravelling the mysteries behind the serial killings form an interesting premise to this novel.

Beth agrees for an interview with Shea 20 years after the acquittal. Why Beth chose Shea? Why is she talking now after all these years? With the first half of the novel packed with intriguing suspense and interesting turn of events that keep unfolding seamlessly, it is a compelling page-turner. The pace of the novel slows down in the second half because of the climactic revelation at the end of the first half.

The non-linear narrative that shifts back and forth in the timeline establishing Beth’s past, Shea’s past and the happenings during the serial killings keeps the reader engrossed. The paranormal events around Beth’s house is a force-fit, but the writer makes use of it to unravel some of the mysteries. The parallels drawn between Shea and Beth from the start till the end establishes the connect between the two central characters on how they get along despite being on the opposite sides.

Even with an interesting premise, convincingly established timeline, well written character sketches, the novel falls short with the limited scope for any big revelations in the second half.

அசோகமித்ரனின் "தண்ணீர்"

அசோகமித்ரனின் "தண்ணீர்" சமூகத்தில் வெவ்வேறு சூழ்நிலைகளால் வாழ்வில் தனிமைப்படுத்தப்பட்ட மூன்று பெண்களின் கதை. 

கனவுகளை துரத்திக்கொண்டு, சினிமா வாய்ப்புத் தேடும் பெண்ணை சினிமா உலகம் எவ்வாறு நடத்தும் என்பதற்கு சாட்சியாய் ஜமுனா. ராணுவத்திலிருக்கும் கணவனைப் பிரிந்து தனது வேலைக்காக தன் மகனையும் உறவினரிடம் விட்டுவிட்டு தனிமையில் வாழும் ஜமுனாவின் தங்கை சாயா. குடும்ப சூழ்நிலையால் நோயாளி கணவனையும், குடும்ப செலவுகளையும், சுமைகளையும் வேறு வழியின்றி தாங்கும் டீச்சரம்மா. 

கற்பு என்ற நிலையை பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும் சம்பந்தப்படுத்தும் நிர்ப்பந்தக் கற்புமுறையால் ஜமுனா சமூகத்தில் சந்திக்கும் சிக்கல்கள், அதன் விளைவாய் அவள் எடுக்கும் இடைக்கால முடிவுகள் பலவீனமானவை. ஜமுனாவின் போக்கு பிடிக்காமலும், கணவரின் இடமாற்றை எதிர்நோக்கியும் சாயா எடுக்கும் முடிவுகள் சுயநலமானவை. குழந்தையின்மையை பெண்ணின் குறையாக மட்டுமே கணிக்கும் சமூகத்தின் பார்வையால் டீச்சரம்மாவின் வாழ்வு பரிதாபமானது. 

இம்மூவரும் நகரத்தில் நிலவும் தண்ணீர் தட்டுப்பாட்டை அவரவர் தேவைக்கேற்ப சமாளிக்க முற்படுகின்றனர். தண்ணீர் கிடைக்கும் பொருட்டு அவர்கள் பெறும் அனுபவங்களின் மூலம் அவர்களுள் நிகழும் உளவியல் மாற்றங்களும், அதன் விளைவாய் அவர்கள் வாழ்வில் எடுக்கும் தெளிவான முடிவுகளும் கதையை உயிர்ப்புடன் நகர்த்திச் செல்கிறது. 

தண்ணீர் கிடைக்க தெரு மக்கள் படும் பாடு, தெரு ஓர குழாயடி சண்டை, அரசாங்கத்தின் அலட்சியம், கிசுகிசுக்களின் களமாக மாறும் குழாயடி என பிண்ணனியில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்கள் நடுத்தர மக்களின் வாழ்க்கையை பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன.

"The Silent Patient" by Alex Michaelides

"The Silent Patient" is a psychological thriller which revolves around a woman Alicia who remains silent after being accused of murdering her husband. Her silence is unperturbed even when declared guilty by the court of law for her husband's murder. With her state of mind, the court sends her to therapy but she chooses to remain silent throughout the psychological treatment. Theo, a psychotherapist is bent upon breaking her silence and uncovering the mystery behind her silence. 

With each central character having a bad past or a disturbed childhood, the novel takes more time establishing them. The non-linear narrative builds up the suspense and propels the novel to a satisfying end.

The analogy to Greek tragedy "Alcestis" fits the storyline perfectly and the events that unfold towards the climax justify the same. 

Though the novel picks up pace midway with interesting turn of events, there are happenings which are added to increase the mystery quotient but do not get a proper closure. 

A decent thriller with its own share of shortcomings!

திரு. டி. செல்வராஜ் எழுதிய "தோல்"

டி. செல்வராஜ் எழுதிய "தோல்" எனும் நாவல் தோல் பதனிடும் தொழிலாளர்களின் வாழ்வியலை பதிவு செய்து, நம்மை அவர்களின் உலகுக்கு இழுத்துச் செல்கிறது. அடிமை வாழ்விலிருந்து விடுபட அதிகார வர்க்கத்திற்கு எதிராகவும், சாதிய அடக்குமுறைக்கு எதிராகவும் அறவழி போராட்டங்கள் மூலமாக எவ்வாறு தொழிலாளர்கள் தங்கள் அடிப்படை உரிமைகளை மீட்டெடுக்கின்றனர் என்பதே இந்நாவலின் மையக்கரு.

பல்வேறு ஊர்களிலிருந்து பிழைப்புக்காக வந்த மக்கள் முறி எழுதி கொடுத்து தோல் ஷாப்புகளில் சேர்வது வழக்கம். வாங்கிய கடனையும் அடைக்க முடியாமல், கூலி அனைத்தும் அன்றாட தேவைகளுக்கும், சாராயத்துக்கும் தீரும் நிலையில் வட்டியும் கட்ட முடியாமல், அடிமைகளாக மரணிப்பதே இவர்களின் வாழ்க்கை. சாராயம் அவர்கள் உடல் வலியைப் போக்கிக்கொள்ள அத்தியாவசியமாகிறது. தோல் பதனிடும் முறையால் அவர்கள் நோயுற்று மரணிப்பதும் சகஜமான ஒன்று. ஊருக்குள் மாடு செத்து விழுந்தால் வந்து தூக்க கீழ்சாதியினரே பணிக்கப்படுவர். தோல் ஷாப்புத் தொழிலாளர்களும் அதே சாதியினர் தான். வர்க்க பேதம், சாதிய அடக்குமுறை இரண்டையும் இம்மக்கள் அனுபவிக்கும் அவலம். தீண்டாமையின் உச்சமாக காற்று கூட சேரியின் வாயிலாக போகாமல் ஊருக்குள் வருமளவுக்கான திட்டமிடல் ஊரையும் சேரியையும் பிரிப்பதில் இருந்திருக்கிறது.

தோல் ஷாப் ஒன்றில் அபலைப் பெண்ணை பாலியல் ரீதியாக துன்புறுத்தும் முதலாளியின் மைத்துனனை ஓசேப்பு எனும் தொழிலாளி தாக்குகிறான். முதலாளியின் அடியாட்கள் அவனைத் தேட ஆரம்பிக்க, வெளியூருக்கு தப்பிச்  செல்ல எத்தனித்து ஓசேப்பு இரயில் நிலையத்தின் பொது கழிப்பறையில் மறைகிறான். பராமரிப்பில்லாத அந்த கழிவறையில் தேங்கி நிற்கும் மலத்தை சாக்கடையில் இருந்து வெளிவந்த பன்றி சுவைக்கிறது. அந்த காட்சியும், அந்த நாற்றமும் அவனை வெளியே துரத்தியிருக்க வேண்டும். அது தான் வாசகனின் எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பும். ஆனால், மலக்கழிவின் வாடை குடலைப் பிடுங்கினாலும், தோல் ஷாப்பின் ரத்தம் கலந்த நிணக்கழிவின் அழுகல் வாடையை விட மோசமாக அவனுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. இந்த ஒரு காட்சி தோல் ஷாப்பு வேலையின் கடினத்தையும், கொடூரத்தையும் விளக்கி நம்மை கலங்கடிக்கிறது. 

அடியாட்களிடம் பிடிபடும் ஓசேப்புக்கு ஆதரவாக வரும் கிருத்துவ பாதிரியாருடன் சேர்ந்து தொழிலாளர்கள் திரள்வதே தங்கள் முதலாளிகளுக்கெதிராக அவர்கள் எழுப்பும் முதல் குரல். தோல் ஷாப்பில் நடக்கும் உழைப்புச் சுரண்டலுக்கும், பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தலுக்கும் எதிராக குரல் கொடுக்கும் தொழிலாளர்களை ஒன்றிணைக்க தொழிற்சங்க அமைப்புகள் உருவாகின்றன. அவை அவர்களின் ஊதிய உயர்வு, முறி ரத்து ஆகியவையோடு அவர்கள் சுயமரியாதையையும் மீட்டெடுக்க உதவுகின்றன. அனைவரும் ஒரு அமைப்பாய் அதிகார அத்துமீறல்களையும் மீறி முதலாளித்துவத்தையும், சாதிய முரணையும் சட்டத்தின் துணை நின்று எவ்வாறு எதிர்கொள்கின்றனர் என்பதே நாவல் நெடுக பரவிக் கிடக்கிறது.

உயர்சாதி வக்கீல் சங்கரன், சுப்புவாடன் போன்ற துப்புரவு பணியாளர்கள், ஓசேப்பு போன்ற தோல் ஷாப் பணியாளர்கள் சங்கத்தில் இணைந்த பிறகு அவர்களுள் நிகழும் உளவியல் ரீதியான மாற்றங்களை பற்றிய விவரணை தொழிற்சங்கங்களின் பலத்தை பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. அனைவரையும் சமமாய் பார்த்தும் சேரி தெருவின் சகதிக்காடான நிலை, தோல் பதனிடும் மற்றும் மலம் அள்ளும் பணியாளர்கள் மீது வீசும் நாற்றம், அவர்களின் அழுக்குத் தோற்றம் அனைத்துக்கும் பழக சங்கரனுக்கு காலம் தேவைப்டுகிறது. சுப்புவாடன் போன்ற துப்புரவு தொழிலாளர்கள் தங்கள் சாதியின் விளைவாக வரும் தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மையிலிருந்து வெளிவர முடியாமல் சமூகத்தில் நிலவும் சாதிய கட்டமைப்பு தடுக்கிறது. ஆயிரமாயிரம் வருடங்களாக இவ்விருவர் நடுவே உடைபடாத மதில்களை "தோழர்" என்ற ஒற்றைச் சொல் உடைத்தெரிகிறது. 

நாவலில் தனிமனித நாயக சாகசங்கள் ஏதும் இடம்பெறாது, உண்மைக்கு நெருக்கமாக, உணர்வு பூர்வமாக அமைகிறது கதையின் போக்கு. தொழிலாளர்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட அமைப்பே நாவலின் நாயகன், அமைப்புக்கான கொள்கையின் துணையோடு நடத்தப்படும் சட்ட போராட்டங்களே சாகசங்கள்.

பொதுவுடைமை இயக்கங்களின் தேவையை உணர்த்தும் இந்நாவல் பல இடங்களில் மாக்ஸிம் கார்கியின் "தாய்" நாவலை நினைவூட்டுகிறது.

சிவசங்கரியின் "பாலங்கள்"

சிவசங்கரியின் "பாலங்கள்" வெவ்வேறு காலக்கட்டங்களில் வாழும் மூன்று பெண்களை முதன்மை கதாப்பாத்திரங்களாக கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. ஒவ்வொரு காலக்கட்டத்திலும் பெண்களின் மனநிலையையும், அவர்களின் குடும்ப சூழலையும், பெண்கள் மீது சமூகம் விதிக்கும் கட்டுப்பாடுகளையும், உடை, உணவு, கல்வி, வேலைவாய்ப்பு, விருப்பம், திருமணம் போன்றவற்றில் அவர்களுக்கிருந்த சுதந்திரத்தின் எல்லையையும் இந்த மூன்று பெண்களின் வாயிலாக பதிவு செய்கிறது. நீண்ட கால மூடநம்பிக்கைகள், சம்பிரதாயங்கள், சாதிய வழக்கங்கள் நிறுவிச் செல்லும் பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தை, அதன் தீவிரத்தை அந்தந்த காலக்கட்டத்தின் சமூக எதார்த்தத்தோடு விவரிக்கிறது இந்நாவல். 

பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தையே வாழ்க்கை நெறியென நம்பி அறியாமையாலும், சமூக கண்ணோட்டத்தாலும், சாதிய வழக்கங்களாலும் அந்த வாழ்வை ஏற்றுக் கொள்பவளாய் சிவகாமு. பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தின் சங்கிலியை உடைத்து, தனது விருப்பங்களை தெரிவிக்கும் வாய்ப்புகள் இருந்தும், குடும்பத்தின் வற்புறுத்தலால் கல்வி முதல் கொண்டு அனைத்தையும் விட்டு, வேறு வழியின்றி வந்த வாழ்வை ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவளாய் மைதிலி. பெண் அடிமைச் சங்கிலியை உடைத்து, கல்வியில் சிறந்து, விருப்பு வெறுப்புகளுக்கு ஏற்ப சுதந்திரமாய் முடிவுகள் எடுப்பவளாய் இருந்தும் ஆணாதிக்கத்தால் தனது சுதந்திரத்திற்கும் எல்லையுண்டு என்பதை உணர்ந்தவளாய் சாரு. 

சாதியப் படிநிலையிலும் அடிமையாய் தான் பெண்கள் இடம்பெற்றனர். அதிலும் இந்நாவல் உயர் சாதி பெண்களை பற்றிய விவரனை. அப்படி இருக்கையில் சாதியப் படிநிலையின் அடிமட்டத்தில் உள்ள சாதியைச் சார்ந்த பெண்கள் சாதி ரீதியான அடிமைத்தனத்தோடு பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தையும் அனுபவிக்கும் அவலம் தான்.

சிவகாமு, மைதிலி, சாரு ஆகிய மூவரின் கதைகளிலுமே மூன்று தலைமுறை பெண்கள் இடம்பெறுகின்றனர். தனக்கு முந்தைய தலைமுறைக்கும், அடுத்த தலைமுறைக்கும் உள்ள கலாச்சார மாறுதல்களையும், அதனால் ஏற்படும் சச்சரவுகளையும் சமாளித்து இருவரையும் ஒரே கூரையில் வாழ வழிவகுக்கும் பாலங்களாய் இம்மூன்று பெண்கள் அமைகின்றனர் என்பதை மிளிரும் மொழிநடையில் இந்நாவல் விவரிக்கிறது.

Lucy Foley’s “The Guest List”

Lucy Foley‘s “The Guest List” is a taut thriller which keeps the readers guessing until the very end. With a group of guests assembled at a high profile wedding in a remote island, the proceedings take a wild turn when a waitress suspects she has seen a body along the shoreline.

The novel shifts back and forth in time to cover the events that happened on the day before the wedding and on the wedding day. This non-linear writing is a great strength to the novel despite being abrupt at certain places. The events unfold before us from each character’s perspective and each character has a backstory which is seamlessly interwoven into the plot. 

We have the formulaic murder mysteries which start with the murder victim and build up to the revelation of the murderer and the motive in the climax. This novel stands apart and keeps the victim as well under wraps and leaves the readers  in intriguing suspense. 

Verity by Colleen Hoover

Lowen, a writer, who is almost broke, lands up with the best offer in her lifetime - to finish the series of best-selling author Verity. Lowen stumbles upon a draft of Verity’s autobiography during the research for the novel and it unearths more mysteries surrounding Verity’s medical condition and the death of Verity’s daughters. As these mysteries unfold, the suspense builds up and the novel keeps us engrossed.

Verity, the protagonist’s character arc is well written and the story depends heavily on this character to move forward. Jeremy, Verity’s husband is a weakly written character despite being the character that is linked to all high points in the novel and travels throughout the length of the novel. Lowen, as a writer who has a secret past and her fear for public / social appearances is a better written character. 

The climactic ending to the novel is great but the novel has its share of shortcomings in the build up to the climax where a lot of unnecessary scenes disturb the flow. The negative shade of Verity is brilliantly written and propels the narration forward. But the wrongdoings of Jeremy and Lowen are silenced at most parts and end up being justified and we wonder whether that was intentional or inadvertent.

Despite the shortcomings, this served just as the satisfactory read to come out of the reading slump.

வரலாற்றுடன் கற்பனையும் கலந்து சோழர் காலத்தில் சாம்ராஜ்ய விஸ்தரிப்புக்காகக் கையாளப்படும் ராஜ தந்திரங்களை வைத்து, விறுவிறுப்பான கதைக்களத்தை உறுவாக்கி கமர்ஷியல் கலவையாய் "மன்னன் மகள்"

ஆனால் பெண் அடிமைத் தனத்தைத் தவறெனச் சுட்டிக் காட்டாமல், பெண்ணைத் தலைப்பில் மட்டும் பிரதானப் படுத்தித் தட்டிக் கழிக்கும் மற்றுமோர் நாவல்.

தகழி சிவசங்கரம் எழுதிய "செம்மீன்" - தமிழில் சுந்தர ராமசாமி

கடலோர மீனவர்களின் சாகச வாழ்வையும், வாழ்க்கை நெறியையும், வாழ்க்கை நெறி விதிக்கும் கட்டுப்பாடுகளையும், சாதி-மதம் போதிக்கும் மூடநம்பிக்கைகளை கண்மூடித்தனமாய் நம்பி, சமூகத்திற்காக அவற்றை ஏற்றும் நடக்கும் மனிதர்களின் எளிய வாழ்வின் எதார்த்த உலகத்தைக் காட்சிப்படுத்தும் நாவல்.

கற்பு என்ற நிலையை பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும் சம்பந்தப்படுத்தும் நிர்ப்பந்தக் கற்புமுறையால், ஒரு பெண் தன்னைத் தன் சமூகத்தின் அவச்சொல்லில் இருந்து காக்க, தன் உணர்வுகளை புதைத்து, தனது வாழ்வை கற்பனையானத் தவவாழ்வாய் மாற்றப் படும் போராட்டம் தான் இந்த "செம்மீன்" சொல்லும் கதை‌.

Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None"

Ten different people invited to an island by their acquaintances arrive only to find out that they were lured here by an unknown host. Everyone has a secret past and unearthing which will have them guilty of a crime. They get murdered one by one for this secret they hold and there is no way to escape death as the island loses contact with the mainland due to a heavy storm. There is increasing tension as each one suspects the other.

With this interesting premise, the novel tries to hold the attention of the readers once the characters are settled. But, the build up to the revelation is slow and takes ample time considering the proceedings need to take place in a closed repetitive atmosphere. A solid climax that unfolds in the epilogue makes up for it and makes this novel a satisfying read.

Harlan Coben's "Tell No One"

A pediatrician who is a grieving husband after his wife's abduction and murder, a serial killer, a witness, a mysterious email to the pediatrician after 8 years impersonating his wife and a rich man whose legacy is in danger. This premise catapults this novel into an intriguing suspense at the very beginning. The build up to the revelations that ensues is interesting and convincing. A flawless narration and a decent climax keeps the readers engrossed till the end.

The Plague by Albert Camus

The Plague - This is a novel written in the 1940s, about a city facing the epidemic of plague, which stays relevant to the current situation we live in. The events recorded here, the preventive measures taken and multiple attempts for a successful vaccine are similar to the scenario during the outbreak of covid.

The characterization in the novel is very good and the characters depict how the society reacts to the epidemic.

The novel depicts Dr. Rieux as the doctor who helps the town fight against the epidemic and spends sleepless nights treating people. The doctor works for the society keeping aside his personal distress of separation from his sick wife who is out-of-town. A character which signifies the role of doctors in facing the epidemic.

Another character Tarrou, a new entrant to the town before the quarantine who has views against death penalty in the judicial system and now lives in a town facing the fear of death in an unusual and unjust situation. He takes up the role of organizing the citizens of the town into volunteering teams. A character which depicts a man who lives by his principles and volunteers himself for a social cause.

The character of Rambert, a journalist from outside the town, who gets trapped during quarantine and takes desperate attempts to escape. A character that deals with the pain of separation from his loved one.

Another interestingly written character is Cottard - a person who has committed a crime in the past and is under a threat to get arrested. He is happy when the town falls under quarantine, as he is not the only person in the state of constant fear. The people of the town are in a state of arrest inside the town. A criminal who is free inside the town as the epidemic keeps the police busy.

There are other minor characters that bring out the religious and conservative views of the town.

All these characters make this novel an interesting read.

தன்னிடம் இருக்கும் சிறிய நிலத்தைக் காப்பாற்ற வேண்டிய சூழ்நிலை இரு வேறு தருணங்களில் ஒரு மனிதனுக்கு ஏற்படுகிறது - முதல் முறை ஒரு இளைஞனாக அவனது எதிர்வினை என்ன? இரண்டாம் முறை மகனை காக்கும் தந்தையாக அவன் எதிர்வினை என்ன? 

இதன் பின்னணியில்... சாதிய ஆதிக்கத்தை வெளிப்படையாக பேசவில்லை என்றாலும், "நிலம்" தரும் அதிகார அடையாளம், "பதவி" தரும் அதிகாரம், "அரசியல்" தரும் அதிகாரம், அவற்றினால் சிறு நில விவசாயிகள் அனுபவிக்கும் அடக்குமுறையை, அவர்கள் வாழ்வு போராட்டமாய் மாறும் நிலையை, இறுதியில் நிலத்தை இழந்து களவாடி வாழும் கட்டாயத்திற்கு ஆளாகும் குடும்பங்களின் நிலையை பேசும் கதை தான் பூமணியின் "வெக்கை".
