Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “White Nights”

“White Nights” is a novella with an anonymous narrator as its protagonist, a man leading a profoundly lonely life. He wanders through the streets of St. Petersburg at night, withdrawn and hesitant to engage with people. Though he recognizes everyone who passes by, he has never truly interacted with them. In his own words, he is “a dreamer,” someone who finds refuge in imagination. His isolation runs so deep that he sometimes imagines himself conversing with buildings and houses. One such night, by the river, he encounters Nastenka, a young woman who appears to be crying. From this chance meeting unfolds a tender tale of longing, despair, and fleeting companionship.

As the narrator begins to speak of his life to Nastenka, he opens up emotionally, having finally found someone with whom he can connect. He describes loneliness as an “uninvited visitor” in his otherwise uneventful existence, confessing how he aches silently. Nastenka, too, is caught in her own state of longing from a sad past. In each other, they discover the companionship they desperately need during a moment of shared vulnerability.

The novella moves between intense happiness and deep melancholy. Though these emotional shifts occur in quick succession, they never feel abrupt. Instead, they mirror the volatility of human emotion, allowing readers to closely relate to the inner lives of the two central characters.

Even Dostoevsky’s choice of words enhances this emotional texture. The use of hyphenated forms such as “to-morrow” and “to-day” subtly keeps the prose from sounding too modern or brisk, slowing the rhythm in a way that suits a narrator who lives more in anticipation than in action. This stylistic choice also echoes one of the novella’s central themes: deferred happiness.

Ultimately, White Nights is a beautiful and poignant tale of alienation, heartbreak, longing, unrequited love and fragile hope.

“The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka

“The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka is a novella about a salesman Gregor who one morning wakes up and finds himself transformed into a venomous bug. His present situation of being confined to his room is contrasting to his nature of work as a salesman that demanded a lot of travel. The novella dwells deep into Gregor’s relationship with his family, his state of helplessness and lack of respite and the unending struggles with the uncertainty of life.

The novella has a melancholic tone throughout, but is laced with metaphors to convey a tale of a person’s descent into despair, fear of going insignificant in his monotonous job routine, his family’s wait for redemption and the inevitability of “moving on” in life. 

Despite the narration being slow paced, the novella portrays a brilliant tale about human relationships and the uncertainty of life. 

சுந்தர ராமசாமியின் "திரைகள் ஆயிரம்"

சுந்தர ராமசாமியின் "திரைகள் ஆயிரம்", நாளிதழ் ஒன்றில் வெளியாகும் ஒரு வல்லுறவு சம்பவத்தின் செய்தியில் தொடங்குகிறது. பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண் தொடரும் வழக்கில் பல பெரும் பணக்காரர்களும், அதிகாரிகளும் பெயரிடப்படுகின்றனர். அதிகாரத்தின் ஆதிக்கத்தாலும், ஊடக சுதந்திரத்தின் துஷ்பிரயோகத்தாலும் உண்மைகள் விற்கப்படுகின்றன. எது உண்மை என்பதை எழுத்தாளன் ஒருவன் தேட முற்படுகிறான், அவனது கதையாடலில் இந்நாவல் பல திருப்புமுனைகள் கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. 

எது உண்மை எது பொய் என்பதை தாண்டி சமூகத்தில் பெண்களின் நிலை, அதிகாரத்தின் வரம்பு மீறல், மக்களின் ஒருதலை சார்பு மற்றும் preconceived notion, அரசாங்கம் மற்றும் பண பலம் படைத்தோர் நீதிமன்றங்களின் மீது செலுத்தும் தாக்கம் என சமகால அரசியல் மற்றும் சமூக சூழலுக்கும் பொருந்தி போகிறது இந்நாவல். 

ஒரு sensitive subject-ஐ சுற்றி பயணித்தும், அழுத்தமான வசனங்கள் இல்லாமல் தட்டையாக அமைகிறது இக்கதை.

கி.ராஜநாராயணனின் "கிடை"

"கிடை", கி.ரா அவர்களின் கரிசல் இலக்கிய படைப்புகளில் ஒன்று. இக்குறுநாவல் ஆடு மேய்ப்பவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையை மையமாகக் கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. 

ஆடுகளை காவல் காக்கும் முறையும், அதற்கு "கிடை"யில் கடைபிடிக்கப்படும் ஒழுங்கும் விவரிக்கப்படுகின்றன. அந்த "ஒழுங்கு" சமூகத்திலும் கடைபிடிக்கப்படுவதற்கு கிராமிய அமைப்பு சாதிய அடிப்படையில் நிறுவும் விதிகளையும், அவற்றை காப்பதற்கு ஆதிக்க சாதியினர் நேரடியாகவும், மறைமுகமாகவும் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் பிரயத்தனமும் தான் கதையின் கரு. 

எல்லப்பன்-செவனி இருவரின் காதல், சமூகத்தில் நிலவும் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வினால் அடையும் முடிவை சமகால கிராமிய பிண்ணனியில் காட்சிப்படுத்துகிறது இந்நாவல். அந்த ஏற்றத்தாழ்வு சில சமயம் சாதிய அடிப்படையிலும், சில சமயம் பொருளாதார அடிப்படையிலும் அமைகிறது. முடிவில் எல்லப்பனின் வீட்டில் நடக்கும் படலமும், செவனியின் வீட்டில் நடக்கும் படலமும் சமூக முரணை பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன.

"The Trial" by Franz Kafka

Joseph.K, a banker by profession, wakes up one day only to find two men appear in his house and keep him under arrest for a crime that is unspecified. The novel progresses with K.'s struggle against the judicial system and his search for the substance of charge leveled against him. He is placed under trial without knowing the specifics of the crime he had committed and every attempt he makes to unravel the reason behind the charge and the status of his trial proves futile. 

The solitary struggle of Joseph.K against the absurd bureaucratic processes of the judicial system is presented as a political satire on totalitarianism. At the same time, K.'s quest to find the substance of his trial is a metaphorical take on his own existence, thus making this an existential novel. 

The self-determined approach of K. towards the start of the trial withers away slowly after his futile attempts at finding what he is guilty of. The final episode conveys the inevitable end of his unjust trial. This analogy with the journey of life towards an inevitable end makes this novel a good read. However, the dead ends which K. faces at all his attempts becomes repetitive at a point and slows down the pace of the novel. With shades of Albert Camus' take on absurdity and existentialism, Franz Kafka's "The Trial" is another classic which can convey different perspectives to different people at different times. 

அசோகமித்திரனின் "மானசரோவர்"

அசோகமித்திரனின் "மானசரோவர்" எனும் நாவல் கோபால், சத்யன் குமார் என இரு வேறு மனிதர்களின் வாழ்வில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்களை மையமாக கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. அவர்கள் இருவரின் மொழி வேறு, மதம் வேறு, பொருளாதார நிலை வேறு, அவர்கள் வாழும் நிலப்பரப்பு வேறு, குடும்ப சூழல் வேறு - அவர்களுக்கு இருக்கும் ஒரே ஒற்றுமை சினிமா துறையில் வேலை என்பதே. தொழில் ரீதியாக அறிமுகமாகும் இவர்கள் நண்பர்களாகின்றனர். அதன் பின்னர் அவர்கள் இருவரின் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்விலும், தொழில்முறை வாழ்விலும் இந்த நட்பின் தாக்கம் தொடர்கிறது. 

இவ்விறு கதாப்பாத்திரங்களின் வாழ்வை மாற்றி அமைக்கும் சம்பவங்கள் நிகழ்கின்றன. அவற்றிலிருந்து மீளவும், தீர்வு காணவும் அவர்கள் ஆற்றும் எதிர்வினைகளும், எடுக்கும் முடிவுகளும் மனித இயல்பின் எல்லைக்குட்பட்டதாக இக்கதையில் அமைகின்றன. வாழ்வில் எதிர்படும் விளங்க முடியாத புதிர்களுக்கு விடைகளை பகுத்தறிவால் அடைய முற்பட்டு இயலாமல், கடைசியாக ஆன்மீகத்தால் அடைய விரும்பும் பெரும்பான்மை மக்களின் பிரதிபலிப்பாக இவ்விறு கதாப்பாத்திரங்கள் அமைகின்றன. கதையின் இறுதியில் கோபால், சத்யன் குமார் இடையே நடக்கும் உரையாடலில் அவர்களின் தேடல் முடிவடைகிறது. 

கதையில் வரும் இந்தியா-பாகிஸ்தான் பிரிவினையும், அதன் விளைவாக இசுலாமிய மக்களின் நிலையும் மேம்போக்காக சொல்லப்பட்டாலும், குடும்பத்தைப் பிரிந்த ஒரு முஸ்லீமின் உளவியல் பாதிப்புகள் நுட்பமாக விவரிக்க படுகின்றன. சினிமா தொழிலாளர்கள் மற்றும் அவர்களது குடும்பங்களின் நிச்சயமற்ற வாழ்வும் இக்கதையில் பேசப்படுகிறது. 

ஆங்காங்கே சிறிது செயற்கை தன்மை தென்பட்டாலும், அசோகமித்திரனின் கதை சொல்லும் விதம் இந்நாவலை உயிர்ப்புடன் நகர்த்தி செல்கிறது. 

ஜி. நாகராஜனின் "குறத்தி முடுக்கு"

ஜி. நாகராஜனின் "குறத்தி முடுக்கு" பாலியல் தொழிலில் ஈடுபடும் பெண்களைப் பற்றிய குறுநாவல். குறத்தி முடுக்கு எனும் கற்பனையாக உருவாக்கப்பட்ட விலைமாதர் தெருவில், விலைமாதரின் வாழ்வை உணர்வுபூர்வமாக சொல்கிறது இந்நாவல். செயற்கையாக இருட்டடிக்கப்பட்ட சாலையாக குறத்தி முடுக்கின் அறிமுகத்தில் துவங்கி, காவல் நிலையத்தில் விலைமாதர் மீது கட்டவிழ்க்கப்படும் வன்முறை வரை மிக நுட்பமான வர்ணனை இந்நாவலில் இடம்பெறுகிறது.

நாவலின் பெண் கதாப்பாத்திரங்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு பின்கதை அமைகிறது. எந்த ஒரு கதாப்பாத்திரத்தின் மீதும் தன் கருத்தை திணிக்க முற்படாமல், அவர்களின் செயல்களை மதிப்பிடாமல், அவர்களின் இயல்பையும் அனுபவங்களையும் மட்டும் பேசுகிறது இந்நாவல். இப்பெண்களின் வாழ்வில் காதலுக்கும் இடமுண்டு, வாழ்க்கை முழுவதும் உறவில்லாமல் வாடி ஒரு குழந்தைக்காக ஆசைப்படும் ஏக்கத்துக்கும் இடமுண்டு என நமக்கு அவர்களின் உலகத்தை அறிமுகம் செய்கிறார் ஜி. நாகராஜன்.

நம் சமூகத்தின் பார்வையில் பாலியல் தொழிலாளியான ஒரு பெண்ணின் மீது சுமத்தப்படும் கண்ணியமற்றவள் எனும் பிம்பம், கற்பை பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும் உரித்தாக்கும் நிர்பந்த கற்பு முறையின் விளைவே. கற்பை புனிதப்படுத்தும் சமூகத்தின் பார்வையிலிருந்து விலகி, பாலியல் தொழிலை மற்றுமொரு தொழிலாக பார்க்கும் மனநிலையை இந்நாவல் கொடுக்கும். 

வண்ணநிலவனின் "கம்பா நதி"

நதிக்கரை மக்களை கதையின் மாந்தர்களாக்கி அவர்களின் வாழ்வையும், மனநிலையையும் பதிவு செய்யும் "கம்பா நதி", அவர்கள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் தனிமனித பிரச்சினைகள், சமூகச் சிக்கல்கள் மூலம் சமூக எதார்த்தவாதத்தை நிறுவிச் செல்கிறது.

திருநெல்வேலியை கதையின் களமாக்கி அந்த நிலப்பரப்பை தன் எழுத்தின் மூலம் நம் கண்முன் கொண்டுவருகிறார் வண்ணநிலவன். அங்கே உள்ள மத வழிப்பாட்டுத் தளங்கள், நதிக்கரை, குறுகிய தெருக்கள், பேரூந்து வழித்தடங்கள், கடைத்தெரு, வீடுகளின் அமைப்பு ஆகியவற்றின் துள்ளியமான வர்ணனையுடன் வட்டார வழக்கில் வரும் உரையாடல்களை சேர்த்து உள்ளதை உள்ளவாரே சித்தரிக்கிறார். சினிமாவும் அவர்களின் வாழ்வின் அங்கமாய் மாறிப் போனதையும் காண்கிறோம்.

குடும்ப உறவுகளின் விரிசல்களையும், உடைந்த குடும்பங்களில் பெண்களின் நிலையையும், அவர்கள் சந்திக்கும் பொருளாதார நெருக்கடியும், தனிமனித ஒழுக்கமின்றி சுயநலத்துடன் அலையும் சங்கரன் பிள்ளையின் குடும்பம் காட்டுகிறது. சமூக அமைப்பு விதிக்கும் நெறி பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும் பொருந்துவதை சரி எனும் ஏற்கும் பொதுவான மனநிலை பெண்களிடம் இருப்பதை சிவகாமி, மரகதம் கதாப்பாத்திரங்கள் பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன. சிவகாமி தன் விருப்பு வெறுப்புகளை மறைத்து குடும்பச் சூழலை சரிகட்ட வேலைக்குச் செல்கிறாள். மரகதமோ "ஆண் என்றால் அப்படித்தான்" என்று ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் நிலையில் இருக்கிறாள். 

வேலையில்லா திண்டாட்டத்தின் தீவிரத்தையும், சிபாரிசில்லாமல் வேலைதேடும் போராட்டத்தையும்  கோமதி, பாப்பையா கதாப்பாத்திரங்களின் காத்திருப்பு பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. பலமுறை ஆட்தேர்வில் ஏமாற்றமடையும் பாப்பையா மூடநம்பிக்கைகளை துணைக்குத் தேடி அதிலும் ஏமாறுகிறான். பாப்பையா இறுதியில் திடீரெனக் கிட்டும் ராணுவ வாய்ப்பை ஏற்கிறான். கோமதியோ தன் விருப்பம் கேட்காமல் அமையும் திருமண ஏற்பாட்டுக்கு மௌனமாக சம்மதிக்கிறாள். இங்கேயும் கூட வேலையின்மையின் அடுத்தக்கட்டம் ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் வேறு வேறாக அமைகிறது. சமகால அரசியல் சூழல், அரசு அலுவலகங்களின் ஆட்தேர்வு முறை, மனிதர்கள் மூடநம்பிக்கைகளில் தஞ்சம் அடையும் வழக்கம் ஆகியவை கேள்விக்குள்ளாகின்றன.

இதைத்தவிர சமூகத்தின் சாதிய மனநிலை, அரசு அதிகாரிகளின் அதிகார வரம்புமீறல் ஆகியவையும் உள்ளது உள்ளபடி பேசப்படுகின்றன. 

மொழிநடையில் மிளிரும் இந்நாவல் அதிகமான கதாப்பாத்திரங்களை அறிமுகப்படுத்தி ஆங்காங்கே கிளைக்கதைகளில் சிக்கிக்கொள்கிறது. அதையும் மீறி தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்த தவரவில்லை.

சி.சு. செல்லப்பாவின் "வாடிவாசல்”

சி.சு. செல்லப்பாவின் "வாடிவாசல்" தமிழரின் வீர விளையாட்டான ஜல்லிக்கட்டை மையமாக கொண்ட குறுநாவல். கடந்த சில வருடங்களாக தொலைக்காட்சிகளிலும், சமூக வலைதளங்களிலும் அலங்காநல்லூர் ஜல்லிக்கட்டின் நேரலை வந்துவிட்டது. அதற்கு முன், மறுநாள் செய்தித்தாள்களும், இரவு நேர செய்திகளும் மட்டுமே ஜல்லிக்கட்டு பற்றிய வர்ணனையை நம்மிடம் வழங்கின. இந்த வர்ணனைகளும், ஜல்லிக்கட்டு பற்றிய கதைகளும் நம்மிடையே அந்த விளையாட்டை நேரில் பார்வையிட வேண்டும் எனும் ஆவலை ஒரு கட்டத்தில் தூண்டியிருக்கக்கூடும். சி.சு. செல்லப்பா அவர்களின் எழுத்தில் அந்த பார்வையாளனின் அனுபவத்தை தருகிறது இந்நாவல். 

களத்தில் மாடு அணையும் வீரர்களின் தயார் நிலை, மிருக வெறியுடன் சீறி வரும் காளைகளின் வகைகள், அவற்றின் பலம்-பலவீனம், மாடு வெளிவரும் குறுகிய பாதையான திட்டிவாசலின் அமைப்பு, முக்கிய பிரமுகர்களுக்கான மேடை அமைப்பு, வீரர்கள் கையாளும் யுக்தி, காளையின் எதிர்பாரா அசைவுகளை சமாளிக்கும் அவர்களின் சாமர்த்தியம் ஆகியவற்றை பற்றிய நுட்பமான விவரணை இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. 

சமூகத்தின் சாதியக் கட்டமைப்பின் பிரதிபலிப்பாய் ஜல்லிக்கட்டு களத்தில் ஒரே சாதிக்குள் நிலவும் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வுகளை சுட்டிக்காட்டுகிறது இந்நாவல். அதிகாரம் மற்றும் சாதிய ஆதிக்கத்தின் அடையாளமாய் வரும் ஜமீன்தார் - சாதிய அமைப்பு மற்றும் வர்கக பேதம் தரும் தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மையின் அடையாளமாய் வரும் பிச்சி இவர்களிடையே நிகழும் உரையாடல் மிக நுட்பமாய் சமூகத்தின் நிலையை பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. 

ஜமீன்தாரின் காரி எனும் காளையை வென்ற வீரனே இல்லை என்ற நிலையில் பிச்சி காரியை எதிர்த்து களத்தில் நிற்கிறான். மற்ற மாடு அணைபவர்கள் காரியின் போக்கு அறிந்து அஞ்சி விலகி நிற்கின்றனர். ஆனால் பிச்சிக்கோ காரியை எதிர்க்க காரணம் இருக்கிறது - அதனுடன் அவனுக்கு இருக்கும் கடந்த கால தொடர்பு. பிச்சி - காரி மோதலை களத்தின் பரபரப்புடன் சி.சு.செல்லப்பாவின் எழுத்து வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது. 

ஜல்லிக்கட்டை பிரதானமாக கொண்டு பயணிக்கும் இந்நாவல் கிராமங்களில் நிலவும் கடவுள் வழிபாடு, சாதிய பெருமை, கிராம மக்களிடையே தோன்றும் இனம்புரியா பாசம் ஆகியவற்றையும் பேசுகிறது. 

வெற்றிமாறன் இயக்கத்தில் திரைப்படமாக உருவாகும் இந்நாவல் இதே தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தினால் வெற்றி தான்.

“The Stranger” by Albert Camus

Albert Camus who believed in “Absurdism” and was quite vocal about it puts across a story in “The Stranger” that is rooted and stays true to his belief. 

Mersault, the protagonist in this novel hears about the demise of his mother in the retirement home that he left her in. He reaches the home for her funeral, but he is not able to feel any sense of grief and he refuses to see his mother’s face for one last time. Since, he is not able to feel any grief which is expected out of him by the society he lives in, he looks like a stranger to himself. The novel starts off with this interesting yet strange scene.

The journey of Mersault from leading a life that he thinks is filled with meaningless events to accepting the inevitability of death is brilliantly portrayed. What makes Mersault feel a stranger in the society is society’s compulsive need to search for a rationale behind one’s actions or the happenings everyday. 

When Mersault is on trial for a crime in the later half of the novel, the same compulsive need makes the jury stand against the fair judgement of the crime. But, some of Mersault’s actions seem strange to us, even if it is justified from his point of view - may be we are driven by society’s collective mindset too!

The characters in the novel who influence Mersault’s actions are well written. These characters and how they link themselves with the protagonist are well established. Finally, when these characters serve as witnesses in Mersault’s trial, there is a proper closure to each of them. 

A slow paced yet impactful novel!

அசோகமித்ரனின் "தண்ணீர்"

அசோகமித்ரனின் "தண்ணீர்" சமூகத்தில் வெவ்வேறு சூழ்நிலைகளால் வாழ்வில் தனிமைப்படுத்தப்பட்ட மூன்று பெண்களின் கதை. 

கனவுகளை துரத்திக்கொண்டு, சினிமா வாய்ப்புத் தேடும் பெண்ணை சினிமா உலகம் எவ்வாறு நடத்தும் என்பதற்கு சாட்சியாய் ஜமுனா. ராணுவத்திலிருக்கும் கணவனைப் பிரிந்து தனது வேலைக்காக தன் மகனையும் உறவினரிடம் விட்டுவிட்டு தனிமையில் வாழும் ஜமுனாவின் தங்கை சாயா. குடும்ப சூழ்நிலையால் நோயாளி கணவனையும், குடும்ப செலவுகளையும், சுமைகளையும் வேறு வழியின்றி தாங்கும் டீச்சரம்மா. 

கற்பு என்ற நிலையை பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும் சம்பந்தப்படுத்தும் நிர்ப்பந்தக் கற்புமுறையால் ஜமுனா சமூகத்தில் சந்திக்கும் சிக்கல்கள், அதன் விளைவாய் அவள் எடுக்கும் இடைக்கால முடிவுகள் பலவீனமானவை. ஜமுனாவின் போக்கு பிடிக்காமலும், கணவரின் இடமாற்றை எதிர்நோக்கியும் சாயா எடுக்கும் முடிவுகள் சுயநலமானவை. குழந்தையின்மையை பெண்ணின் குறையாக மட்டுமே கணிக்கும் சமூகத்தின் பார்வையால் டீச்சரம்மாவின் வாழ்வு பரிதாபமானது. 

இம்மூவரும் நகரத்தில் நிலவும் தண்ணீர் தட்டுப்பாட்டை அவரவர் தேவைக்கேற்ப சமாளிக்க முற்படுகின்றனர். தண்ணீர் கிடைக்கும் பொருட்டு அவர்கள் பெறும் அனுபவங்களின் மூலம் அவர்களுள் நிகழும் உளவியல் மாற்றங்களும், அதன் விளைவாய் அவர்கள் வாழ்வில் எடுக்கும் தெளிவான முடிவுகளும் கதையை உயிர்ப்புடன் நகர்த்திச் செல்கிறது. 

தண்ணீர் கிடைக்க தெரு மக்கள் படும் பாடு, தெரு ஓர குழாயடி சண்டை, அரசாங்கத்தின் அலட்சியம், கிசுகிசுக்களின் களமாக மாறும் குழாயடி என பிண்ணனியில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்கள் நடுத்தர மக்களின் வாழ்க்கையை பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன.

The Plague by Albert Camus

The Plague - This is a novel written in the 1940s, about a city facing the epidemic of plague, which stays relevant to the current situation we live in. The events recorded here, the preventive measures taken and multiple attempts for a successful vaccine are similar to the scenario during the outbreak of covid.

The characterization in the novel is very good and the characters depict how the society reacts to the epidemic.

The novel depicts Dr. Rieux as the doctor who helps the town fight against the epidemic and spends sleepless nights treating people. The doctor works for the society keeping aside his personal distress of separation from his sick wife who is out-of-town. A character which signifies the role of doctors in facing the epidemic.

Another character Tarrou, a new entrant to the town before the quarantine who has views against death penalty in the judicial system and now lives in a town facing the fear of death in an unusual and unjust situation. He takes up the role of organizing the citizens of the town into volunteering teams. A character which depicts a man who lives by his principles and volunteers himself for a social cause.

The character of Rambert, a journalist from outside the town, who gets trapped during quarantine and takes desperate attempts to escape. A character that deals with the pain of separation from his loved one.

Another interestingly written character is Cottard - a person who has committed a crime in the past and is under a threat to get arrested. He is happy when the town falls under quarantine, as he is not the only person in the state of constant fear. The people of the town are in a state of arrest inside the town. A criminal who is free inside the town as the epidemic keeps the police busy.

There are other minor characters that bring out the religious and conservative views of the town.

All these characters make this novel an interesting read.

Mother - A masterpiece... Undeniably!

This is an interesting read into the life of factory workers. The exploitation of labour and enslavement of workingmen by the capitalists depicted here stands true even today.

The story revolves around a woman, her miserable life as a wife, her unconditional love for her son, and her transformation from a fearing wife and a doting mother to a mother who cares not just for her son, but for all socialists who fight against the power hungry capitalists.

The happenings are real and the characters evolve with the proceedings and make a strong impact. The character arc of the Mother is unbelievably real and takes its time to evolve. The transformation is setup in stages and is not immediate which makes this novel nothing short of reality. 

A novel that highlights the need of social reform in our society!
