“The Incredible Life of Savitribhai Phule - The Fearless Reformer” by Swati Sengupta

It was a time when women in India were confined to the households by virtue of inveterate age old beliefs. It was a time when the caste system deep rooted in the society purposefully denied education to women and lower castes. It was a time when any change to the so called “order” that the caste system dictates was regarded an impending danger to the society. The regressive state of the society imposed practices of child marriage, sati, enforced widowhood, all of which were mere attempts to curtail the freedom of women and establish the unjust social order. Being a woman from a lower caste meant she had to endure double the oppression - caste based and gender based.

A 9-year old girl who dreamt of going to school was facing the situation of getting married to an unknown 13-year old boy. From this stage where she had to succumb to the societal shackles to a stage where she was instrumental in shattering the societal shackles not just for her but for generations to come, Savitribhai Phule’s journey is a testament to her determination, bravery and resilience.

“The incredible life of Savitribhai Phule - the fearless reformer” by Swati Sengupta is a concise biography of Savitribhai that covers all key events in her life chronologically from her marriage to death. Savitribhai was born in 1831 into a Dalit family at Naigaon, a village in Maharashtra. Savitribhai who was getting married to Jyotirao at the age of nine thought that was the end of her dream to learn. On the contrary, little did she know that she was about to be the pioneer of feminist movement in India and the first ever woman teacher of India.

Jyotirao, who had experienced a denial of education after being humiliated by higher caste students at school understood Savitribhai’s pain and her wish to learn. He taught her to read and write. Savitribhai, determined to change the pitiful state of women in India decided to impart education to women in her neighbourhood. She attended teacher training to ensure she was equipped to impart knowledge to the underprivileged girls.

When Savitribhai was 17, she and Jyotirao decided to start a school for girls. In 1848, they started the first school for girls in India at Bhidaweda, a locality in Pune. Her attempt to educate women was a direct opposition to what was happening in the society.

On her way to school, loud, jeering voices came to her from all sides. She was targeted with incessant violence and the crowd used to pelt stones at her. People used to fling dung at her cursing her of ruining the purity of the society. However, she was undeterred and continued to follow her path to liberate women from the patriarchy and the shackles of caste. Savitribai once stated, “As I do the sacred task of teaching my fellow sisters, the stones or cow dung that you throw seem like flowers to me. May God bless you!”. Such was her resilience and her refusal to conform.

Savitribhai did not limit herself to educating women to free them from the patriarchy they had been subjugated to. She voiced out against social ostracisation of widows and organised a barber’s strike against shaving the hair of widowed women in 1860. Widowed mothers who were often sexually exploited, killed off newborns and committed suicide. Savitribhai started a home for widowed mothers and children born out of wedlock.

“Satyashodhak Samaj” started by Savitribhai and Jyotirao focused on the fight for social equality of the marginalised and women. The organization also promoted Satyashodhak marriage - a marriage that rejected dowries, happened without following any customs and respected both the bride and groom equally.

Savitribhai died at the age of 66 succumbing to bubonic plague after being at the forefront of providing rehab and medical facilities to patients who were affected with the same disease.

Savitribhai Phule is a revolutionary who stood against all odds for the betterment of the society. She took the unchartered paths that no one else had dared to take before.

Remembering Periyar E.V.Ramasamy on his birth anniversary

"Periyar" E.V. Ramasamy, a social reformer from Tamil Nadu is known for his unyielding propaganda against caste inequalities and gender based discrimination. Though some of his speeches and writings are misinterpreted today for misleading the masses and his principles are convieninetly misquoted "anti-hindu" as against "anti-casteist", he still remains as the icon of social justice in Tamil Nadu. Confining Periyar as an atheist has been an ongoing conscious attempt at diluting his ideology which encompasses annihilation of caste, gender equality, women empowerment, questioning of superstitious beliefs, rationalism and self-respect. Periyar, being an extremist, questioned the fallacy of age-old beliefs and enlightened the masses to be rational and believed that reason is the guiding light.

Periyar's voice against untouchability and caste discrimination reverberates till date. His simplistic writings on the injustice of caste-based system that garners attention of any common man makes it difficult for casteists to convert him into a harmless icon, the only other option is to tarnish his image which is what is happening now.

Periyar’s book “Why were women enslaved?” is an insightful perspective into the unfair and unequal treatment women receive in our society. Periyar lists down the aspects and ideologies that curtail the freedom of women and in turn lead to a woman’s life always being dependent on the male counterpart.

The fallacious inveterate beliefs that confine women are dealt with uncompromisingly forthright counter arguments, no matter which religion or ideology preaches them. The book gives a fitting end by stating the enslavement of women can end only when unnecessary pride in the masculinity of the opposite gender withers away or gets abolished.

There are some extreme views put forth in this book, which are debatable, but one cannot ignore  or brush aside the facts emphasized here. Periyar's ideology on women empowerment needs to be spread to the masses.

Remember that these thoughts were put together in words 100 years back during a time when they would have been received with the most savage malice.

"I do not say you should believe what I have said because it alone is certain. Accept such ideas as can be accepted, with the help of your reason, after a sound inquiry. Reject the rest" - Periyar

Let us read him, understand him and subject his thoughts to inquiry. We can criticise him on the ones which we deem unacceptable and accept only those which feel right in the light of reason!

Remembering Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary (Apr 14th)

Until I started reading history of Indian independence outside of the academic history text books, little did I know about a struggle that happened parallel to the struggle for political independence - the struggle for social freedom. The struggle for Indian Independence is taught in schools and is well-known to the students. Similarly, the struggle for social freedom in India has a long history. This struggle against the social structure of caste needs to be reiterated in the history books.

When our freedom fighters were fighting against the British rule in India, there were leaders who led the struggle against the caste discrimination in India. This article is in remembrance of Dr. Ambedkar, the face of social justice in India on his birth anniversary (14th April).

One news or the other surfaces everyday about the discrimination of lower castes by the hierarchically dominant castes in India. The restless and tense situation that engulfs the society in such happenings stems out of the unnecessary pride that the dominant castes hold, the unjust and unfair privileges they get from the caste system and the feeling of inferiority that the oppressed take upon themselves yielding to the age old beliefs and practices.

The ignorance and preconceived notion around reservation needs to be cleared. The thought of taking pride in one's caste needs to be deemed unjust and how this pride impacts the mental health of fellow human beings from lower castes needs to be pointed out. The tense situation whenever there is a caste feud has its roots in ignorance and the unnecessary pride.

Social freedom has remained a necessity in Indian societies for long and attaining that can be achieved only with the relentless upholding of Dr. Ambedkar’s principles and writings.

Dr. Ambedkar’s principles and writings teaches us to stand not just against the caste based discrimination but also against any form of discrimination - be it gender based or class based or racial discrimination. Any discrimination across the world should be dealt with uncompromisingly forthright arguments and relentless protests and campaigns.

Even today, we have his statues put behind bars at many places in India. This is the respect the society gives for the man who stood for social justice and the freedom of the oppressed. This arises from the grudge due to the unjust caste hierarchy deep-rooted in our society.

One can pelt stones at his statues and confine them behind bars. But, there is no confinement for his principles and writings. There might be attempts to rob his revolutionary theory of its substance and convert him into a harmless icon, every attempt at it should be curtailed by propagating his principles and educating the masses about what he stood against.

Let us celebrate Dr. Ambedkar as the leader of the masses. Hereafter, let only the bars around his statues be broken, not his statues.

Ambedkar Death Anniversary 2021 /

Even today, we have his statues put behind bars at many places in India. This is the respect the society gives for the man who stood for social justice and the freedom of the oppressed. This arises from the grudge due to the unjust caste hierarchy deep-rooted in our society.

Let us celebrate Ambedkar as the leader of the masses. Hereafter, let only the bars around his statues be broken, not his statues.

Castes in India by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

This research paper by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is a clear and concise text on the origin of caste system and the means of preservation of this unnatural hierarchical structure in the society.

The paper outlines how classes became castes and how Sati, Enforced widowhood and Girl marriage are linked to the concept of caste and presents before us enough arguments as justifications.

To put forth rational arguments to explain the complex caste system and its mechanism, origin and development in just 18 pages is again a testimony to Ambedkar's clarity of thoughts and his voluminous understanding of the caste system.

A must-read !!!
