What happened to Buddha will not happen to Periyar!

There are theories and historical texts that point to the conversion of Buddhist signs and symbols into brahminical signs and symbols. The mythological story that links a white elephant with the birth of Gautama Buddha in later stages was used a symbol of Buddha by Buddhist monks who led a nomadic life to propagate the Buddhist principles and they installed those statues under Bodhi trees and mountain caves. 

Buddhism that does not acknowledge the existence of supreme god or deity focuses on achieving enlightenment instead. The Dravidian people who were used to idol worship started worshipping these symbols installed by Buddhist monks. People were attracted to the Buddhist principles which employ a radical approach in pointing out that they can overcome their sorrows by changes to their lifestyle and actions, instead of branding one’s sufferings as the consequence of one’s deeds in previous births. 

There are arguments that the Buddhist symbol - elephant under the Bodhi tree or on the shores of a riverbank was later used to create Vinayakar, a Hindu god in an attempt to rob its popularity and slowly convert Buddha as a harmless icon to their own ideology.

A week back, there was a picture circulated in social media by right wing extremists which depicted Periyar as a pig carrying urine bag in its hand - a futile attempt to mock him and his ideology. As a personality who was open to criticism and who takes ridicule and mockery head on, this would have been welcomed by him had he been here. The response to the same would have been at his satirical best. 

Who knows, they might continue on this path to convert Periyar into customised versions of the boar avatar “Varaha”. But, what happened to Buddha will never happen to Periyar!

His preachings to the general public were uncompromisingly forthright and were formed on the basis of rationalism, empiricism and at the same time were in simple terms. He stood against brahminical supremacy, caste hierarchies, racial inequality, gender inequality and acknowledged economic disparities in his criticism. So, they can never rob his revolutionary theory of its substance and make it their own. He can never be converted into a harmless icon - he will stand tall as a symbol against any form of oppression.

Even if they manage to achieve it, theirs would be the first group to celebrate an atheist as a godly figure. 

Even after his death, his principles are being received with most savage malice and most furious hatred from the right wing; he continues to stand tall no matter how many stones they pelt at him. Remembering our Periyar on his death anniversary!!

வண்ணநிலவனின் "கடல்புரத்தில்"

வண்ணநிலவனின் "கடல்புரத்தில்" கடலோர கிராமங்களில் வாழும் மனிதர்களின் வாழ்வை மையமாக கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. இந்நாவலில் வரும் கதைமாந்தர்களின் வழி அம்மனிதர்களின் தனிமனித உறவுகளையும், அந்த உறவுகளினால் ஏற்படும் உளவியல் ரீதியான சிக்கலையும் விவரிக்கிறார் வண்ணநிலவன். உறவுகளில் வரும் சண்டைகளையும், குற்ற உணர்வுகளையும், துரோகங்களையும் மீறி நிலைத்திருக்கும் அன்பை பேசும் நாவல் இது.

வல்லத்தில் மீன் பிடிக்கும் மீனவர்களுக்கும், லாஞ்சியில் மீன் பிடிக்கும் மீனவர்களுக்கும் நடக்கும் தொழில் போட்டியின் தொடர்ச்சியாய் வரும் சச்சரவுகளையும், அதன் விளைவுகளின் எல்லைகளையும் பேசுகிறது இந்நாவல்.

தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாய் மீன்பிடி தொழிலில் ஈடுபட்டு வரும் குரூஸ் மிக்கேலுக்கும், குலத்தொழிலை விட்டுவிட்டு வாத்தியாக அண்டை ஊருக்குச் சென்ற அவரது மகன் செபஸ்த்திக்கும் நடக்கும் உரையாடலில் துவங்குகிறது நாவல். வல்லத்தையும் குலத்தொழிலையும் உயிரென பாவிக்கும் தந்தைக்கும், வறுமையிலிருந்து விடுபட நினைக்கும் மகனுக்குமான தலைமுறை இடைவெளியை இதில் காட்சிப்படுத்துகிறார் வண்ணநிலவன். 

நாவலின் பிரதான கதாப்பாத்திரமாக வரும் பிலோமி தான் சந்திக்கும் எல்லோரிடமும் அன்பை காண்கிறாள் - அந்த உறவு தனக்கு எவ்வளவு துன்பம் தந்தாலும். சமூக பார்வையில் பிலோமியின் தாய் - வாத்தியார் உறவு சிக்கலான உறவாக இருந்தும், அதற்கு முரணான காமத்தை தாண்டிய ஆண்-பெண் உறவை பிலோமி-வாத்தியார் இடையே இந்நாவலில் காண முடிகிறது. நாவலில் ஆங்காங்கே வந்தாலும் பிலோமி - ரஞ்சி உறவு எதையும் எதிர்பாராத நட்புறவாய் மிளிர்கிறது. 

இந்நாவலில் வரும் மனிதர்களின் வாழ்வில் "கடல்" ஒரு அங்கமாய் இருக்கிறது. பல இடங்களில் தங்கள் துயரங்களை கடலிடமே புலம்புகின்றனர். நலிந்து வரும் வியாபாரத்தால் படும் நட்டங்களை கடலிடமே முறையிடுகின்றனர். அவர்களுக்கு பல நேரங்களில் கடவுளாகவும், கண்ணிர் துடைக்கும் கரமாகவும் கடலே இருக்கிறது.

"Becoming Babasaheb" by Aakash Singh Rathore

"Becoming Babasaheb" is an ambitious biography of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar that presents the life and times of Ambedkar in the chronological order of events from his birth in 1891 until the Mahad Satyagraha in 1929 - probably the first volume of the biography to be followed by another. The biography clears up many misconceptions prevalent surrounding the actions and decisions of Ambedkar. With exhaustive research and list of references evident from the bibliography and notes at the end of the book, a lot of fact checking has gone into the writing of this book. 

This book also debates the anamolies and discrepancies put forward by other biographies of Ambedkar. Though the book articulates in detail the key events that made Ambedkar "Babasaheb" among the untouchables and marginalized, it sometimes attempts too much correcting the chronology and justification behind Ambedkar's actions that are put forth by other biographers. 

Nevertheless, this book delves deep into the political stance Ambedkar took in various occasions and how it brought about a shift in mindset of the Savarna Hindus, untouchables and the British government. The articles published by Ambedkar after the historic Mahad conference are such samples which are discussed in detail here. Ambedkar's choice of words in these articles not only urged untouchables for gaining self-respect and their readiness to fight against the inveterate beliefs, but also served as a warning to the caste Hindus and the British government on the impending battle against the denial of fundamental rights, education and basic amenities to the untouchables and the social reform acts that were not put into action.

This book is an earnest attempt that not only showers acclaims on the reforms which Ambedkar was instrumental in implementing, but also criticizes some of the decisions made by Ambedkar. The distressing events of caste inequalities that unfolded in Ambedkar's life and his painful recollection of the same are also touched upon here. 

A personality who should have been celebrated as the leader of entire country is sadly being restricted as the leader of a particular community. More such works like this might serve the purpose of portraying Dr.Ambedkar as the leader of the masses.

"The Girl on the Train" by Paula Hawkins

"The Girl on the Train" by Paula Hawkins is a mystery novel that revolves around three central female characters - Anna, Megan and Rachel whose lives are intertwined with jealousy, betrayal and contempt. 

Rachel, an alcoholic who is unable to cope up with her failed marriage takes the train in and out of London everyday and notices the lives of people living along the tracks when the train stops at the signal. She begins to notice a happy couple and builds an imaginary world about them in her mind. But, she notices something off one day and that changes everything she had imagined. She realises that she knows too much about the couple only when the lady in the house goes missing one Saturday night. To top that, she was in the same street that night but she is not able to remember anything that happened as she was drunk. Does she have any connect with the disappearance of the lady? Did she notice anything odd that would be of importance in the ongoing investigation? Is she responsible in anyway for what happened?

The novel is a slow-burn thriller that takes time to build up the suspense, but it gives a feeling something bad is going to happen until the point when it actually happens. The non-linear narrative is confusing at times with the timelines going back and forth, narrated by three different women. But, the novel stays focused and doesn't deviate much holding the attention of the readers all through.

Though the novel becomes predictable towards the end, the intense scenes, the backstory of each character, the justification behind their actions, the uninterrupted flow of events in this unsettling thriller make it a compelling read. 

யுகபாரதியின் "முனியாண்டி விலாஸ்"

"முனியாண்டி விலாஸ்" என கவிதை தொகுப்பிற்கு பெயரிட்டதே இப்புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்கும் ஆர்வத்தை தூண்டியது. இன்று முனியாண்டி விலாஸ் நலிந்து பல கிளைகளை மூடி வந்தாலும், எஞ்சி இருக்கும் கிளைகள் மேற்கத்திய உணவை இங்கே பரப்பி வரும் கேஎஃப்சி-களையும், மெக்டோனால்ட்ஸ்-களையும் எதிர்த்து நிற்கும் தனித்துவம் கொண்டவை. அதே தனித்துவம் இக்கவிதை தொகுப்பில் தென்படுகிறதா?

இத்தொகுப்பில் இடம்பெறும் கவிதைகள் உணவு, உடை, உறவுகள், உணவகம், மழை, கல்வி நிலையங்கள், காதல், காமம், சமூக நிலை, சாதி, அரசியல் ஆகியவை பற்றிய கருத்துகளுடன் கவிஞரின் கருத்தியலையும் தாங்கி நிற்கின்றன. அரசியல் தலைவர்களை பற்றிய விமர்சனங்களுடன் தேர்தல் அரசியல் நகர்வுகளையும், வாக்காளர் மனநிலையையும் அப்பட்டமாக வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன சில கவிதைகள். அரசியல் சார்ந்த கவிதைகளை தாண்டி உணவு,  காதல் பற்றிய கவிதைகளிலும் அவற்றை சுற்றிய அரசியல் இடம்பெற்று சமகால சமூக சூழலை பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. 

பொது இடங்களில் சாதிய பாகுபாட்டையும், வர்க்க வேறுபாட்டையும் தூக்கிப் பிடிக்கும் நிலையை உணவகங்கள் பற்றிய கவிதை பேசுகிறது. அசைவ உணவின் மணம் பல கவிதைகளில் வீசுகிறது. அடுக்கக வாழ்க்கை பற்றிய கவிதை அடுக்கு மாடி வீடுகளில் வாழும், நிற்க கூட நேரமில்லாமல் ஓடும் மனிதர்களின் அவல நிலையை பேசுகிறது. 

பல கவிதைகள் முற்போக்கு சிந்தனைகளை வெளிப்படுத்தினாலும், ஆங்காங்கே சில கவிதைகள் பொதுவான மனநிலையில் தென்படுகின்றன. 

நம்மைச் சுற்றி நிகழும், நாம் கவனித்த-கவனிக்க மறந்த தருணங்களை நமக்கு நெருக்கமான மொழியில் இப்புத்தகம் வழங்குகிறது.

சுந்தர ராமசாமியின் "திரைகள் ஆயிரம்"

சுந்தர ராமசாமியின் "திரைகள் ஆயிரம்", நாளிதழ் ஒன்றில் வெளியாகும் ஒரு வல்லுறவு சம்பவத்தின் செய்தியில் தொடங்குகிறது. பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண் தொடரும் வழக்கில் பல பெரும் பணக்காரர்களும், அதிகாரிகளும் பெயரிடப்படுகின்றனர். அதிகாரத்தின் ஆதிக்கத்தாலும், ஊடக சுதந்திரத்தின் துஷ்பிரயோகத்தாலும் உண்மைகள் விற்கப்படுகின்றன. எது உண்மை என்பதை எழுத்தாளன் ஒருவன் தேட முற்படுகிறான், அவனது கதையாடலில் இந்நாவல் பல திருப்புமுனைகள் கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. 

எது உண்மை எது பொய் என்பதை தாண்டி சமூகத்தில் பெண்களின் நிலை, அதிகாரத்தின் வரம்பு மீறல், மக்களின் ஒருதலை சார்பு மற்றும் preconceived notion, அரசாங்கம் மற்றும் பண பலம் படைத்தோர் நீதிமன்றங்களின் மீது செலுத்தும் தாக்கம் என சமகால அரசியல் மற்றும் சமூக சூழலுக்கும் பொருந்தி போகிறது இந்நாவல். 

ஒரு sensitive subject-ஐ சுற்றி பயணித்தும், அழுத்தமான வசனங்கள் இல்லாமல் தட்டையாக அமைகிறது இக்கதை.

Lucy Foley’s “The Paris Apartment”

“The Paris Apartment” is a locked room mystery that is set in an eerie apartment in Paris. The novel sets off on a high note - Jess, a young woman who has left her job in less than ideal circumstances arrives at Paris to stay with her step-brother Ben, but finds him missing. While she is on pursuit to find Ben, she stumbles upon secrets that the apartment and its residents hold. Are these secrets the reason for Ben’s disappearance? Was Jess too late to save Ben? With this intriguing premise, does the novel live up to the expectations?

The novel is presented with each character narrating their side of the story, very similar to Lucy Foley’s “The Guest List”. The timeline is sometimes confusing in the non-linear narrative style that the novel adopts. There is enough depth to the backstories of each of the characters, but the novel takes too much time to establish the relationship between the characters and the mystery connection each one of them has with Ben. The novel presents twisted relationships, dysfunctional families and the inner battles which the characters go through in a convincing manner.

The revelation towards the climax is a great twist, but do the readers have to go through the snail-paced build up to that revelation? Though the mystery in the novel piles up, there is not much happening within the confined atmosphere of the Paris apartment and it makes us wonder at one point where the novel is headed.

The Paris Apartment - Despite a brilliant and convincing twist at the end, the novel tests our patience with its slow paced narration. 

கி.ராஜநாராயணனின் "கிடை"

"கிடை", கி.ரா அவர்களின் கரிசல் இலக்கிய படைப்புகளில் ஒன்று. இக்குறுநாவல் ஆடு மேய்ப்பவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையை மையமாகக் கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. 

ஆடுகளை காவல் காக்கும் முறையும், அதற்கு "கிடை"யில் கடைபிடிக்கப்படும் ஒழுங்கும் விவரிக்கப்படுகின்றன. அந்த "ஒழுங்கு" சமூகத்திலும் கடைபிடிக்கப்படுவதற்கு கிராமிய அமைப்பு சாதிய அடிப்படையில் நிறுவும் விதிகளையும், அவற்றை காப்பதற்கு ஆதிக்க சாதியினர் நேரடியாகவும், மறைமுகமாகவும் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் பிரயத்தனமும் தான் கதையின் கரு. 

எல்லப்பன்-செவனி இருவரின் காதல், சமூகத்தில் நிலவும் ஏற்றத்தாழ்வினால் அடையும் முடிவை சமகால கிராமிய பிண்ணனியில் காட்சிப்படுத்துகிறது இந்நாவல். அந்த ஏற்றத்தாழ்வு சில சமயம் சாதிய அடிப்படையிலும், சில சமயம் பொருளாதார அடிப்படையிலும் அமைகிறது. முடிவில் எல்லப்பனின் வீட்டில் நடக்கும் படலமும், செவனியின் வீட்டில் நடக்கும் படலமும் சமூக முரணை பிரதிபலிக்கின்றன.

Matthew Perry (1969-2023)

The man who brought life into the character of Chandler Bing from sitcom FRIENDS - A character who hides his childhood trauma and his awkwardness during emotional moments with sarcasm. A character who yearns for love and is hopelessly immature and desperate in his relationships until he finds the love of his life. A character who tries to overcome his inner battles and slowly grows into a responsible family man and an emotionally strong human. 

The character demanded a person who is incredibly funny, capable of coming up with witty dialogues and has an impeccable timing at comedy, a person who is rational and practical at all situations.

அசோகமித்திரன் அமெரிக்காவின் ஐயோவா மாநிலத்தில் பிறநாட்டு எழுத்தாளர்களுடன் தங்கியிருந்த அனுபவங்களையும், அங்கே அவருக்கு ஏற்பட்ட பயண அனுபவங்களையும் ஒரு புனைகதையுருவில் "ஒற்றன்" எனும் நாவலாய் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்.

Fifty-Fifty by Steve Cavanagh

Fifty-fifty starts off as a murder mystery with two sisters on trial, each accusing the other for the gruesome murder of their father, a millionaire. 

In a male dominated profession, a young female lawyer Kate Brooks who is part of an established firm is forced to stand against the firm after being subjected to harassment. She represents Alexandra, one of the sisters and is convinced that her client is innocent. An ex-con artist turned lawyer Eddie Flynn represents Sofia, the other sister and believes in her innocence. The prosecutor Dreyer convinces the judge to have a joint trial for both the sisters which means Eddie will be pitted against Kate with a possibility that either one or both the sisters will be convicted at the end of the trial. 

The novel starting off as a murder mystery is tense and has enough elements to sustain the suspense, but the brilliant courtroom drama that ensues is what makes this novel a compelling thriller. With a steady pace, the novel piques the reader’s interest with enough high points. The readers are kept guessing with their suspicion oscillating from one sister to another as events unfold in this taut legal thriller.

A plot that stands out from template murder mysteries, the intense courtroom drama and a convincing climax makes this novel gripping!

Carrie by Stephen King

Stephen King’s “Carrie” is a supernatural horror novel that delves deep into the darkest corners of the human psyche. The novel is about Carrie, a girl with telekinetic powers - latent at first but intensifies as the novel progresses with each of her traumatic experience. 

Carrie, a high school student is often bullied by her classmates and suffers distressing experiences at school. Her mother being a religious fanatic, Carrie grows up in her oppressive influence as a naive and emotionally deranged kid. 

The narrative of the novel is presented as a combination of prose, excerpts from police investigation, news snippets, magazine articles, interviews and a personal diary of one of the characters Sue. The idea of narration from the perspective of different characters adds necessary depth to the proceedings. However, there are pacing issues and sometimes the narration from Sue’s diary feels like a monologue. 

Carrie’s characterisation as an emotionally disturbed kid due to the conservative upbringing in the hands of a religious fanatic mother and her spiralling descent into madness caused by events of extreme psychological trauma is well written. The other characters in the novel create a diverse environment and get proper closure at the end of the novel. 

A slow paced, yet well-written supernatural horror novel. 

Agatha Christie’s “The Murder on the links”

Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie’s very own Sherlock Holmes reappears in this complex whodunit which is twisted, smart and compelling. 

Poirot receives a letter from a wealthy businessman Monsieur Renauld summoning him to France to help him from an impending danger. Poirot arrives at France only to learn that his arrival is late and Renauld has already been murdered. His wife, his rumoured mistress and her young daughter, his son, an unknown lady who met with him on the day of the murder and a tramp are in the list of suspects and Poirot is presented with innumerable possibilities, and to top that he is pitted against a younger and equally competent detective. 

Despite the twisted storyline and the overwhelming list of characters, the novel keeps us guessing until the very end and at no point it gives us the feel that we have it all figured out. The psychological angle to the murder investigation that Agatha Christie brings in every Poirot novel is a delight to read. 

Readers might need to closely follow up on the characters, their relations with each other and to the victim and the information they reveal in the interrogations. Yet, this is a smartly written murder mystery that never loses its steam.

"The Trial" by Franz Kafka

Joseph.K, a banker by profession, wakes up one day only to find two men appear in his house and keep him under arrest for a crime that is unspecified. The novel progresses with K.'s struggle against the judicial system and his search for the substance of charge leveled against him. He is placed under trial without knowing the specifics of the crime he had committed and every attempt he makes to unravel the reason behind the charge and the status of his trial proves futile. 

The solitary struggle of Joseph.K against the absurd bureaucratic processes of the judicial system is presented as a political satire on totalitarianism. At the same time, K.'s quest to find the substance of his trial is a metaphorical take on his own existence, thus making this an existential novel. 

The self-determined approach of K. towards the start of the trial withers away slowly after his futile attempts at finding what he is guilty of. The final episode conveys the inevitable end of his unjust trial. This analogy with the journey of life towards an inevitable end makes this novel a good read. However, the dead ends which K. faces at all his attempts becomes repetitive at a point and slows down the pace of the novel. With shades of Albert Camus' take on absurdity and existentialism, Franz Kafka's "The Trial" is another classic which can convey different perspectives to different people at different times. 

Remembering Periyar E.V.Ramasamy on his birth anniversary

"Periyar" E.V. Ramasamy, a social reformer from Tamil Nadu is known for his unyielding propaganda against caste inequalities and gender based discrimination. Though some of his speeches and writings are misinterpreted today for misleading the masses and his principles are convieninetly misquoted "anti-hindu" as against "anti-casteist", he still remains as the icon of social justice in Tamil Nadu. Confining Periyar as an atheist has been an ongoing conscious attempt at diluting his ideology which encompasses annihilation of caste, gender equality, women empowerment, questioning of superstitious beliefs, rationalism and self-respect. Periyar, being an extremist, questioned the fallacy of age-old beliefs and enlightened the masses to be rational and believed that reason is the guiding light.

Periyar's voice against untouchability and caste discrimination reverberates till date. His simplistic writings on the injustice of caste-based system that garners attention of any common man makes it difficult for casteists to convert him into a harmless icon, the only other option is to tarnish his image which is what is happening now.

Periyar’s book “Why were women enslaved?” is an insightful perspective into the unfair and unequal treatment women receive in our society. Periyar lists down the aspects and ideologies that curtail the freedom of women and in turn lead to a woman’s life always being dependent on the male counterpart.

The fallacious inveterate beliefs that confine women are dealt with uncompromisingly forthright counter arguments, no matter which religion or ideology preaches them. The book gives a fitting end by stating the enslavement of women can end only when unnecessary pride in the masculinity of the opposite gender withers away or gets abolished.

There are some extreme views put forth in this book, which are debatable, but one cannot ignore  or brush aside the facts emphasized here. Periyar's ideology on women empowerment needs to be spread to the masses. 

Remember that these thoughts were put together in words 100 years back during a time when they would have been received with the most savage malice.

"I do not say you should believe what I have said because it alone is certain. Accept such ideas as can be accepted, with the help of your reason, after a sound inquiry. Reject the rest" - Periyar

Let us read him, understand him and subject his thoughts to inquiry. We can criticise him on the ones which we deem unacceptable and accept only those which feel right in the light of reason!

The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose

"The Perfect Marriage" by Jeneva Rose is a murder mystery with a twisted plot that has an intriguing premise. A successful lawyer Sarah has to defend her husband Adam on the murder trial of Kelly, her husband's mistress. A twisted plot is put forth convincingly until the very end, but does the writing and climactic revelation live up to the built-up suspense?

Sarah's character sketch, as a competent and successful defense attorney is one of the biggest strengths for this novel. Even that suffers from a weak writing towards the end. Adam's character on the other hand has enough presence throughout the novel that is more convincing as the vulnerable, helpless suspect who is deperate to come out of the situation he is in. The other characters are given adequate importance but there isn't anything exceptional as they come along as the usual ones in any mystery novel - some of them being added just to build up the list of suspects. 

Though the proceedings in the novel keep the readers engaging with short chapters and enough twists, the novel tries hard to satisfy the readers with a climax that throws them off-guard which might be a hit-or-miss. 

கபிலன் வைரமுத்துவின் "ஆகோள்"

கபிலன் வைரமுத்துவின் "ஆகோள்" அறிவியல் புனைவாக அமையும் ஒரு த்ரில்லர் நாவல். சங்க காலத்தில் சிற்றரசுகளினிடையே நிகழும் போர்களில் "ஆநிரை கவர்தல்" என்பது எதிராளியின் வளங்களாகிய ஆடு - மாடுகளை கவர்ந்து வரும் செயலைக் குறிக்க பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது. இந்த செயல் ஒரு தரப்பினருக்கு வீரச்செயலாகவும், மறு தரப்பினருக்கு களவாகவும் தோன்றும். 

"ஆகோள்" எனும் பதமும் எதிரிகளின் வளங்களை கவர்ந்து அவர்களை வலுவிழக்க செய்வதையே குறிக்கிறது என்கிறார் எழுத்தாளர். இனிவரும் காலங்களில் “data” தான் உலகில் மிகப்பெரிய வளமாக கொள்ளப்படும். தனிப்பட்ட தகவல்களையும், தரவுகளையும் கவரும் நோக்கத்தில் தொழில்நுட்ப பெருநிறுவனங்களும், அதற்கு ஆதரவு அளிக்கும் நிலையில் உள்ள உயரதிகாரமும் இச்சமூகம் எதிர்கொள்ள வேண்டிய அபாயம்.

இந்நாவலின் கதையில் இந்திய அரசு கொண்டு வருவதாக "அடையாள்" எனும் ஒற்றை அடையாள ஆவணத்திற்கு தேவையான தனிநபர் அடையாளங்களான கைரேகை மற்றும் கருவிழி தகவல்களை சேமிக்கும் நிறுவனத்தில் நடக்கும் விதிமீறல்கள் இடம்பெறுகின்றன. இன்றைய தலைமுறையினர் சந்திக்கும் "identity theft" மற்றும் "invasion of privacy" ஆகியவற்றை சுதந்திரத்திற்கு முன் கொண்டுவரப்பட்ட கைரேகை சட்டத்துடன் பொருத்தி இக்கதை ஒரு புனைவாய் அமைகிறது. அதே சமயம் கைரேகை சட்டத்தை பற்றியும், அதன் பின்னணியில் இருக்கும் அரசியல் பற்றியும், பாதிக்கப்பட்ட சாதிகளின் போராட்டத்தை பற்றியும், அழுத்தமாக பதிவு செய்கிறது இந்நாவல். 

சமகால அரசியல் நிகழ்வுகளையும், அரசியல் கட்சிகளின் நகர்வுகளையும், மககளின் மனநிலையையும் நாவல் நெடுக நக்கல் நையாண்டியுடன் வரும் வசனங்கள் விமர்சிக்கின்றன.

"The Housemaid's Secret" by Freida McFadden

"The Housemaid's Secret" by Freida McFadden is a spiritual sequel to her previous thriller "The Housemaid" that has a similar storyline. Millie, the housemaid and Enzo, the gardener from her previous novel are retained in this sequel. While it is natural to draw comparisons with the prequel, does the author succeed in her story telling to make this a gripping thriller?

Millie who has been helping married women and rescuing them from domestic abuse after her similar encounter with Nina Winchester in the prequel enters the house of a zillionaire only to find his wife Wendy mysteriously locking herself up in the guest bedroom. When Millie tries to talk to her about the situation, she learns about yet another episode of domestic abuse which she might need to help with. Will Millie be able to rescue Wendy standing up against the resources Wendy's husband has at his disposal?

The novel moves at a rapid pace right from the start and there is no point where the intensity drops. Even when the storyline gets predictable because of the prequel, the novel keeps the readers engaged with enough elements of suspense. The climactic end is strewn with a lot of twists but the author manages them without becoming an overdose. 

A brilliant sequel that has a similar storyline as the prequel but with a better execution this time around!

Independence Day - Political Freedom vs Social Freedom

On the account of 77th year of Indian independence, this article is in remembrance of the freedom fighters of our country and at the same time is a reminder on the need for social freedom even today after 76 years of independence. There have been communal riots and caste-based violence in India over the past few months which made me think that there is still a long way India must travel to overthrow all forms of oppression similar to how our freedom fighters overthrew the British dominance.

There is no doubt the resilient and persistent efforts of our freedom fighters in the struggle against the 89-year British rule in India needs to be celebrated. But, the freedom of the country should mean the freedom of each individual citizen of India. The struggle for political independence finds a place in the history textbooks of schools in India. The struggle for social freedom also has a parallel history which is not reiterated enough. This struggle has been prevalent right from the pre-independence era and is still an unrealized dream. 

The constitution of India declares India as secular and deems all its citizens equal. But, the fundamental right to equality is questioned every single time when a caste-based harrassment or violence comes to limelight. The unjust hierarchical structure of caste system is deep-rooted in Indian societies, in people's beliefs and mindset. The class-based inequalities which is universal combines with the caste-based inequalities in India. The recent riots in Manipur, violence in Haryana and the caste based brutality in Nanguneri in Tamilnadu reflects the pity state of the society we live in. The penetration of this caste pride to the level that it gets carried over to the next generation is the danger our society poses.

Most of the incidents of caste based violence stem out from the unnecessary pride that the upper castes hold and the self-inflicted inferior feeling that the lower castes suffer from due to the inveterate age-old beliefs. 

Dr. Ambedkar, one of the prominent leaders India had and his writings against the social order and the social injustice stay relevant even today. Bhagat Singh, the socialist icon of India and his principles and beliefs against the class inequalities is also need of the hour. Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent struggle against the britishers and preachings on religious unity stand as a testimony to the harmony he dreamt of.

While we celebrate the history of freedom struggle and the leaders who brought about the uprising of people against the British rule, we will also acknowledge the need to carry forward the awareness about fight for social freedom. Let us unite together and be the voice against any form of oppression - be it class-based or caste-based or gender-based.

"Thriller” நாவல்களுக்கே உள்ள பாணியில் கதையின் மாந்தர்களில் யார் உண்மையின் பக்கம், யார் தீமையின் பக்கமென கணிக்க முடியாத திருப்பங்களுடன் இந்நாவல் வாசகனின் ஆர்வத்தை தக்க வைக்க முயல்கிறது. கேள்வி படாத பல அறிவியல் முன்னேற்றங்கள், தொழில்நுட்பங்கள் இந்நாவலில் பிரதானமாக இடம்பெறுவது, சிலவற்றை நமக்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்தினாலும், தேவைக்கு அதிகமாக அமைந்து சில இடஙகளில் சலிப்பு தட்டுகிறது. 

ஏராளமான கதாப்பாத்திரங்கள் வலம் வந்தும், கதையை விட்டு எங்கும் விலகி செல்லாமல் பயணிக்கிறது இந்நாவல். ஒவ்வொறு அத்தியாயத்தின் முடிவிலும் போடப்படும் முடிச்சு, அதை தொடர்ந்து கதையில் அமையும் காட்சிகளின் வேகம் ஆகியவையே இந்நாவலின் பலம். கதையின் climax கலவையான விமர்சனங்களை பெறலாம்.

ராஜேஷ்குமார் style-ல் ஒரு நல்ல thriller, a light read. 

"The Maid" by Nita Prose

"The Maid" by Nita Prose is a cozy mystery novel that revolves around a maid who finds a business tycoon dead during her cleaning duty in a high profile luxury hotel. Molly, the maid who struggles with her cognitive abilities especially relating to sociability finds herself accused of murder. 

The novel takes too much time establishing the character of Molly and her condition that it becomes repetitive after a point of time and the suspense around the murder takes a backstage in the first half. The second half of the novel moves at a steady pace with the proceedings building up the suspense, but suffers from inconsistencies in character sketch of Molly. 

The well-written courtroom scenes are few sparks of brilliance in an otherwise predictable novel. The climactic end gives us some interesting twists which is a savior. Despite the shortcomings, the novel is still a good read. 

Vladimir Lenin's "The State and Revolution"

Vladimir Lenin's “The State and Revolution” puts forth Marx and Engels’ views on the state, its origin, the need for setting up the transition from capitalism to complete communism in stages and the inevitability of a revolution in the process of attaining the same. This work of Lenin also argues against the distortion of Marxism by theories from socialist theorists like Kautsky and quotes excerpts from the works of Marx and Engels to disprove such theories. 

Unlike the popular opinion that the “state” is needed for maintaining the order in the society, Marx and Engels expose the “state” as a product of the society due to irreconcilable class antagonisms - the state will wither away when the oppression by capitalists and bourgeois rule are overthrown as a result of the revolution by the proletariat and the society’s transition to become classless. The state includes the police, judiciary, administrative functions and this book explains how it favours the minority oppressors in the capitalist society. 

Marx’s theory of attaining an ideal society driven by complete communism from an existing capitalist society and its transition in stages is realistic and is a theory built on experiences from the Paris Commune and other proletariat revolutions across the world. The role of proletariat democracy and the destruction of the bureaucratic apparatus of the bourgeoisie in this transition is explained in detail drawing references from Marx and Engels and refuting the claims of Kautsky which are indirectly in favour of opportunism. 

Of late, there are claims that communism is an outdated principle and ideology. In India, in addition to the class based oppression, the ideology also faces a challenge to overcome caste based oppression. This book that is a commentary on Marx and Engels theories is a reminder that the ideology is still relevant and holds good for any society with any irreconcilable antagonisms.

அசோகமித்திரனின் "மானசரோவர்" எனும் நாவல் கோபால், சத்யன் குமார் என இரு வேறு மனிதர்களின் வாழ்வில் நடக்கும் சம்பவங்களை மையமாக கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. அவர்கள் இருவரின் மொழி வேறு, மதம் வேறு, பொருளாதார நிலை வேறு, அவர்கள் வாழும் நிலப்பரப்பு வேறு, குடும்ப சூழல் வேறு - அவர்களுக்கு இருக்கும் ஒரே ஒற்றுமை சினிமா துறையில் வேலை என்பதே. தொழில் ரீதியாக அறிமுகமாகும் இவர்கள் நண்பர்களாகின்றனர். அதன் பின்னர் அவர்கள் இருவரின் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்விலும், தொழில்முறை வாழ்விலும் இந்த நட்பின் தாக்கம் தொடர்கிறது. 

இவ்விறு கதாப்பாத்திரங்களின் வாழ்வை மாற்றி அமைக்கும் சம்பவங்கள் நிகழ்கின்றன. அவற்றிலிருந்து மீளவும், தீர்வு காணவும் அவர்கள் ஆற்றும் எதிர்வினைகளும், எடுக்கும் முடிவுகளும் மனித இயல்பின் எல்லைக்குட்பட்டதாக இக்கதையில் அமைகின்றன. வாழ்வில் எதிர்படும் விளங்க முடியாத புதிர்களுக்கு விடைகளை பகுத்தறிவால் அடைய முற்பட்டு இயலாமல், கடைசியாக ஆன்மீகத்தால் அடைய விரும்பும் பெரும்பான்மை மக்களின் பிரதிபலிப்பாக இவ்விறு கதாப்பாத்திரங்கள் அமைகின்றன. கதையின் இறுதியில் கோபால், சத்யன் குமார் இடையே நடக்கும் உரையாடலில் அவர்களின் தேடல் முடிவடைகிறது. 

கதையில் வரும் இந்தியா-பாகிஸ்தான் பிரிவினையும், அதன் விளைவாக இசுலாமிய மக்களின் நிலையும் மேம்போக்காக சொல்லப்பட்டாலும், குடும்பத்தைப் பிரிந்த ஒரு முஸ்லீமின் உளவியல் பாதிப்புகள் நுட்பமாக விவரிக்க படுகின்றன. சினிமா தொழிலாளர்கள் மற்றும் அவர்களது குடும்பங்களின் நிச்சயமற்ற வாழ்வும் இக்கதையில் பேசப்படுகிறது. 

ஆங்காங்கே சிறிது செயற்கை தன்மை தென்பட்டாலும், அசோகமித்திரனின் கதை சொல்லும் விதம் இந்நாவலை உயிர்ப்புடன் நகர்த்தி செல்கிறது. 

திரு. கணேஷ் அவர்களின் "ஓம்... க்ரீம்... ஐஸ்கிரீம்..."

திரு. கணேஷ் அரசு பள்ளி மாணவர்களுடன் நடத்திய உரையாடல்களை புத்தகமாக தொகுத்து வழங்கியிருக்கிறார். நமது கல்வி முறையில் வகுப்பறையில் நடக்கும் உரையாடல்கள் மிகக் குறைவு. இப்புத்தகத்தில் இடம்பெறும் கற்பித்தல் முறை "உரையாடல் வழி கல்வி"யாக அமைகிறது. 

இங்கே பாடங்களாகவும், கருத்துக்களாகவும் இடம்பெறும் அனைத்தும் என்னை பள்ளி பருவத்திற்கு கூட்டிச் செல்லும் ஒரு nostalgic trip ஆக எனக்கு அமைந்தது - ஆனால் நான் இவ்வளவு எளிதாக அவற்றை உள்வாங்கிக் கொள்ளவில்லை. நமது கல்வி கற்பித்தல் முறையும் எளிமைப்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதை உணர்த்துகின்றன கணேஷ் அவர்களின் concepts. 

ஒரு சிறு மெழுகுவர்த்தியில் இருக்கும் அறிவியலில் துவங்கி, cyborg எனும் அறிவியல் முன்னேற்றம் மற்றும் அதை பயன்படுத்தும் தொலைநோக்கு பார்வை வரை இப்புத்தகம் மாணவர்களுக்கு பல்வேறு அறிவியல் கருத்துக்களை எளிதாக விளக்குகிறது. தமிழ் இலக்கணம், வரலாற்று நிகழ்வுகள் பற்றி தகவல்களும் இடம்பெறுகின்றன. அத்துடன் நில்லாமல் உரையாடல்களில் வெளிப்படும் சமூக அக்கறையும், சமகால சமூக அமைப்பின் மீதான விமர்சனமும் மாணவர்களிடையே பேசப்பட வேண்டியவையே.

 

இப்புத்தகம் நெடுக வரும் உரையாடல்களில் கலந்திருக்கும் நகைச்சுவையும் கூடுதல் பலம்.

ஜி. நாகராஜனின் "குறத்தி முடுக்கு"

ஜி. நாகராஜனின் "குறத்தி முடுக்கு" பாலியல் தொழிலில் ஈடுபடும் பெண்களைப் பற்றிய குறுநாவல். குறத்தி முடுக்கு எனும் கற்பனையாக உருவாக்கப்பட்ட விலைமாதர் தெருவில், விலைமாதரின் வாழ்வை உணர்வுபூர்வமாக சொல்கிறது இந்நாவல். செயற்கையாக இருட்டடிக்கப்பட்ட சாலையாக குறத்தி முடுக்கின் அறிமுகத்தில் துவங்கி, காவல் நிலையத்தில் விலைமாதர் மீது கட்டவிழ்க்கப்படும் வன்முறை வரை மிக நுட்பமான வர்ணனை இந்நாவலில் இடம்பெறுகிறது.

நாவலின் பெண் கதாப்பாத்திரங்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு பின்கதை அமைகிறது. எந்த ஒரு கதாப்பாத்திரத்தின் மீதும் தன் கருத்தை திணிக்க முற்படாமல், அவர்களின் செயல்களை மதிப்பிடாமல், அவர்களின் இயல்பையும் அனுபவங்களையும் மட்டும் பேசுகிறது இந்நாவல். இப்பெண்களின் வாழ்வில் காதலுக்கும் இடமுண்டு, வாழ்க்கை முழுவதும் உறவில்லாமல் வாடி ஒரு குழந்தைக்காக ஆசைப்படும் ஏக்கத்துக்கும் இடமுண்டு என நமக்கு அவர்களின் உலகத்தை அறிமுகம் செய்கிறார் ஜி. நாகராஜன்.

நம் சமூகத்தின் பார்வையில் பாலியல் தொழிலாளியான ஒரு பெண்ணின் மீது சுமத்தப்படும் கண்ணியமற்றவள் எனும் பிம்பம், கற்பை பெண்களுக்கு மட்டும் உரித்தாக்கும் நிர்பந்த கற்பு முறையின் விளைவே. கற்பை புனிதப்படுத்தும் சமூகத்தின் பார்வையிலிருந்து விலகி, பாலியல் தொழிலை மற்றுமொரு தொழிலாக பார்க்கும் மனநிலையை இந்நாவல் கொடுக்கும். 

Sidney Sheldon's "The Sands of Time"

Sidney Sheldon's "The Sands of Time" is an action adventure novel that revolves around four nuns who escape a military assault on a Christian convent and are forced to face the challenges of the outside world which they had once renounced. 

The four nuns Megan, Lucia, Graciela and Teresa are being chased by the military after their escape and they are forced to travel with the rebels who are branded terrorists by the Spanish government. Jaime Miro, the most wanted rebel known for his exploits to keep the military and police at bay is burdened with the responsibility of escorting the nuns to a safe place. The nuns reinvent themselves on this journey through the hills and forests with the tension of military closing in on them - a journey where they have to adapt and survive. 

Each one of the nuns have a terrible past and they cocoon themselves into the church as their last resort and escape from the harsh reality of their present lives. With that environment changed now, they fight back their inner fears and their nightmares of the past to adapt to the changed world. The backstories of the nuns are slightly disturbing which justifies their actions but at times obscene which could have been avoided with no impact to the storyline. 

The political situation in Spain where Basques were fighting against Spanish nationalists for self-governance or complete independence to preserve their identity forms the backdrop of this novel and is convincingly interwoven into the storyline. But, the lives of rebels and them giving in to personal desires and urges depicted here is questionable. The lives of nuns inside the Christian institutions and how they are asked to suppress their desires and feelings in the name of service to God depicted here is close to reality.

The novel builds up a tale of bravery, betrayal and survival in a steady pace to keep the readers engaged. There is enough drama to propel the novel to a climactic end. The closure Sidney gives to the characters stay true to the storyline and the character sketches instead of pulling off an unprecedented end just to pique the reader’s interest.

Barring the obscenity and some unnecessary romantic sequences, the novel still is a good read. 

The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

“The Maidens” is another murder mystery from Alex Michaelides after “The Silent Patient” which revolves around a secret society that is based on Greek mythology. 

Mariana, a psychotherapist who had lost her husband Sebastian few years back receives a call from her niece Zoe and gets to know that Zoe’s friend has been brutally murdered. Mariana is concerned about Zoe and reaches Cambridge to be with her. 

With mysteries surrounding the murder and suspicions being raised over a professor who teaches Greek tragedy to Zoe and her classmates, Mariana decides to stay at Cambridge to uncover the truth and the identity of the killer. The killings continue and Mariana stumbles upon an evidence that connects these serial killings to Greek mythology. 

The novel starting off as a template serial killer mystery, has all potential to become an intriguing and compelling murder mystery. Does it hold on to the promising premise and builds on it? 

There are too many characters introduced just to add up to the suspense and the closure the novel provides for these characters is underwhelming in some cases. Mariana being a psychotherapist trying to play a detective is not convincing either. 

The literary references in the novel not only creates a great impact but also sticks to the storyline without deviating much. That is a big plus. The author also makes an interesting connection to his previous novel “The Silent Patient” bringing in its central characters Theo and Alicia into this universe. This is not a force-fit and blends seamlessly with the proceedings in the novel. 

With few sparks of brilliance here and there, the novel plummets down with a climax that throws us off guard in an unconvincing way.
