நாவலில் இடம்பெறும் சென்னையின் வர்ணனை சமகால நிகழ்வுகளை பதிவு செய்தாலும் திருவல்லிக்கேணி, மைலாப்பூர் வர்ணனைக்கும் - சைதாப்பேட்டை வர்ணனைக்கும் உள்ள வேறுபாடு தான் stereotyping. இதைத் தான் தமிழ் சினிமா தற்சமயம் மாற்றி வருகிறது.

இந்த குறைகளை மீறி சுபாவின் “கம்பிகளுக்குப் பின்னே” ஒரு entertaining and engaging murder mystery with all commercial ingredients!

நாட்டின் ரகசியங்களை பாதுகாக்கும் அமைப்பில் பணியாற்றும் ஒருவன், ஒரு அணு விஞ்ஞானியை விமான நிலையத்தில் இருந்து பாதுகாப்பாக அழைத்து வர நியமிக்கப்படுகிறான். அழைத்து வரும் வழியில் விஞ்ஞானி ஒரு மர்ம கும்பலால் கடத்தப்படுகிறார். 

இந்த கடத்தல் தன் மேற்பார்வையில் நடந்ததன் தீவிரம் அவனுக்கு புரியும்போது, தனது தவறை நினைத்து பயம் மற்றும் குற்ற உணர்வு அவனை ஆட்கொள்கிறது. அதே நேரத்தில், எந்த ஆதரவுமின்றி தனி ஆளாகவே விஞ்ஞானியை மீட்க களமிறங்குகிறான். அங்கிருந்து பல action காட்சிகளுடன் ஒரு action thriller ஆக மாறுகிறது கதையின் போக்கு.

Sole twist ஒன்றை நோக்கி நகரும் இந்த நாவல், இறுதிவரை சற்று தொய்வுகளுடனே பயணிக்கிறது. அந்த ஒரே twist உண்மையிலேயே திருப்திகரமாக இருக்கிறதா என்பது சந்தேகமே. நல்ல premise இருந்தும், conspiracy thriller ஆக தொடராமல் ஒரு passable read ஆக மட்டுமே அமைகிறது.

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “White Nights”

“White Nights” is a novella with an anonymous narrator as its protagonist, a man leading a profoundly lonely life. He wanders through the streets of St. Petersburg at night, withdrawn and hesitant to engage with people. Though he recognizes everyone who passes by, he has never truly interacted with them. In his own words, he is “a dreamer,” someone who finds refuge in imagination. His isolation runs so deep that he sometimes imagines himself conversing with buildings and houses. One such night, by the river, he encounters Nastenka, a young woman who appears to be crying. From this chance meeting unfolds a tender tale of longing, despair, and fleeting companionship.

As the narrator begins to speak of his life to Nastenka, he opens up emotionally, having finally found someone with whom he can connect. He describes loneliness as an “uninvited visitor” in his otherwise uneventful existence, confessing how he aches silently. Nastenka, too, is caught in her own state of longing from a sad past. In each other, they discover the companionship they desperately need during a moment of shared vulnerability.

The novella moves between intense happiness and deep melancholy. Though these emotional shifts occur in quick succession, they never feel abrupt. Instead, they mirror the volatility of human emotion, allowing readers to closely relate to the inner lives of the two central characters.

Even Dostoevsky’s choice of words enhances this emotional texture. The use of hyphenated forms such as “to-morrow” and “to-day” subtly keeps the prose from sounding too modern or brisk, slowing the rhythm in a way that suits a narrator who lives more in anticipation than in action. This stylistic choice also echoes one of the novella’s central themes: deferred happiness.

Ultimately, White Nights is a beautiful and poignant tale of alienation, heartbreak, longing, unrequited love and fragile hope.

ராஜேஷ்குமாரின் "கடைசி தீக்குச்சி"

ராஜேஷ்குமாரின் “கடைசி தீக்குச்சி” ஒரு bio-medical thriller ஆகத் தொடங்குகிறது. ஆரம்பக் காட்சியே அட்டகாசமாக stage செய்யப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. போலீஸ் checkpost-ஐ உடைத்துக்கொண்டு செல்லும் ஒரு van-ஐ போலீசார் துரத்திப் பிடித்து, அதைத் திறந்து, கடத்தப்பட்டது என்னவென்று பார்க்கும் காட்சி பரபரப்பாகவும், எதிர்பாராத முடிவுடனும் அமைகிறது.

அதிலிருந்து அடுத்தடுத்த அத்தியாயங்களில் பரபரப்புக்கு குறைவில்லாமல் நாவல் பயணித்தாலும், முதல் காட்சி மட்டுமே ஆழமான தாக்கத்தை அளிக்கிறது. கதையில் ஏகப்பட்ட twists and turns—சில பொருத்தமானவை, பல கடமைக்காக. 

Bio-medical thriller ஆகத் தன்னை identify செய்து கொண்டாலும், நாவல் பெரும்பாலும் Bio tech company ஒன்றில் நடக்கும் serial murders பற்றிய investigative thriller/murder mystery ஆகவே நகர்கிறது. சில இடங்களில் continuity gaps, பல இடங்களில் over-stressing என glaring குறைகளும் உண்டு.

கவிஞர் மு.மேத்தாவை நான் அறிந்தது திரைப்பாடல்கள் மூலமே. ரெட்டை வால் குருவி திரைப்படத்தில் வரும் "ராஜ ராஜ சோழன் நான்" பாடலும், காசி திரைப்படத்தில் வரும் "என் மன வானில்" பாடலும் தான் மு.மேத்தாவை எனக்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்தின.

- போன்ற வரிகளில் ஈர்க்கப்பட்ட நான், மு.மேத்தாவின் கவிதைகளை வாசிக்க எத்தனித்தேன். "ஆகாயத்துக்கு அடுத்த வீடு" கவிதைத் தொகுப்பை புத்தகக் கண்காட்சியில் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தேன். 

இந்த கவிதைத் தொகுப்பில் காதல், இயற்கை, மனித இயல்பு ஆகியவற்றைப் பற்றிய கவிதைகளிருந்தும், அரசியல் நையாண்டியும், சமூக அவலநிலை பற்றிய கோபமும் பல கவிதைகளில் பிரதானமாக தென்படுகின்றன. சமகால அரசியல் நிகழ்வுகளையும் கவிதைகள் மூலம் பதிவு செய்கிறார் மு. மேத்தா. இன்றைய சூழலுக்கும் அக்கவிதைகள் பொருந்திப் போகின்றன. பழகிப்போன கற்பனைகள் ஆங்காங்கே இருந்தாலும் மக்களுக்கு நெருக்கமான மொழியில், வாசகர்களைத் திணரடிக்காமல் எளிய சொற்களை கையாள்கிறார் கவிஞர்.

“Dark Matter” by Blake Crouch

Jason, an atomic physicist and a professor at a small university lives a happy life with his wife Daniela and son Charlie in the suburbs of Chicago. Jason and Daniela had given up their aspirations to build a family when they got accidentally pregnant. Jason gave up his intensive quantum research and Daniela her art career. One night, Jason is abducted at gun point by a masked man and drugged, only to wake up in a world where he is a renowned physicist, but is not married to Daniela.

The novel sets the possibility of parallel universes as the backdrop and explores human tendency of counterfactual thinking for events that have already occurred. Though the concept of multiverse presented an option to have a non-linear narrative, the novel keeps it simple with a linear narrative style. The novel portrays the concept of multiverse with unadorned simplicity to the extent that it is delightfully absurd at many places. There is a poignant love story beautifully interwoven in this techno-thriller. The novel is fast-paced with occasional dips and has a seamless narration throughout.

A simple yet engaging sci-fi novel with an interesting premise and near-perfect execution!

“Days at the Morisaki Bookshop” by Satoshi Yagisawa (Translator - Eric Ozawa)

Takaka’s life is in disarray after an abrupt end to her relationship, when her boyfriend betrays her to marry someone else. When she is reluctant to face the harsh reality of her situation, she is forced to stay at her uncle Satoru’s cozy little bookshop. Though she is not quite convinced about the idea, she decides to go, only to realise that it was the best decision she ever made.

After sleeping off her initial days at the bookshop locking herself into her room and reeling over her past, she is pulled out by her uncle for a walk in the neighbourhood which starts off her journey towards self-realisation. A simple life over books and coffee, the close-knit neighbourhood, contended life of the people and above all the teetering pile of books around her help her on her gradual transformation. The power of books to teleport oneself and escape from the harsh reality heals Takaka.

The novel presents before us Takaka’s emotional journey through betrayal, heartbreak, healing and self-discovery in the first part. However, the second part shifts its focus to Satoru’s estranged wife Momoko which serves as a distraction to an otherwise breezy novel.

Despite the shortcomings in the latter half, the ambience the novel paints before us about the bookstore and the neighbourhood is one world every avid book reader will wish to be part of. 

Michael Connelly’s “The Lincoln Lawyer”

Michael Haller, a criminal defence attorney is a cynical yet rational lawyer who operates out of the back of his Lincoln town car. He had always feared he wouldn’t recognise innocence one day when it stood right in front of him. That time comes when he lands on a case of aggravated assault and attempted murder defending a wealthy realtor, Louis Roulet. Though the case looks like a slam dunk case for the prosecution, Haller finds a glimmer of a hope on further discovery to save his client. He throws the case wide open only to find himself at crossroads where he can save only one of his two clients.

With legal complications mounting, ethical obligations to be upheld and his own life at stake, will the Lincoln lawyer find a way out of this conflict of interest? Michael Haller, as a charismatic attorney with a blunt candour and an emotionally vulnerable father to his estranged daughter is a well written character. There are equally important well etched characters that come along.

An interesting premise and a seamless chain of events that ensue with a banger of a twist at half way through the novel makes this a gripping read. A point of no return with a brilliantly written courtroom drama in the second half finishes this novel on a high.

கவிக்கோ அப்துல் ரகுமானின் "ஆலாபனை"

கவிக்கோ அப்துல் ரகுமானின் "ஆலாபனை" சாகித்திய அகாதமி விருது பெற்ற முதல் கவிதைத் தொகுப்பு. இந்நூலில் வரும் கவிதைகள் மனித இயல்பை பிரதிபலிப்பதோடு மனித வாழ்க்கையைப் பற்றிய தத்துவங்களையும் பேசுகிறது. இயற்கையை கொண்டாடுவதோடு நில்லாமல், மனிதன் பரிணாம வளர்ச்சியினால் இயற்கையை அலட்சியப்படுத்துவதையும் சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறது இந்நூல். இயற்கையைக் கொண்டாடும் கவிதைகளில் துள்ளிய வர்ணனையும், அசரவைக்கும் கற்பனையும் நம்மை பிரமிப்பில் ஆழ்த்துகின்றன. மனித மனங்களின் இருண்ட பக்கங்களையும், மனித எதிர்பார்ப்புகளின் முரணையும் அப்பட்டமாக பல கவிதைகளில் பதிவு செய்கிறது இந்நூல். 

உண்மையையும், தூய்மை எனும் போலியையும், இயற்கையையும், பேதமில்லா சமூகத்தையும், பாலின சமத்துவத்தையும், பகுத்தறிவையும் பேசும் பல கவிதைகள் இந்நூலில் பரவிக் கிடக்கின்றன. நம்மை நாமே self introspect (சுயபரிசோதனை) செய்யவும் இந்நூல் தூண்டுகிறது.

சென் பாலனின் "பரங்கிமலை இரயில் நிலையம்"

சென் பாலனின் "பரங்கிமலை இரயில் நிலையம்" ஒரு இரயில் நிலைய மரணத்தைச் சுற்றி நடக்கும் investigation drama. பரங்கிமலை இரயில் நிலையத்தில் மின்தொடர் வண்டியிலிருந்து தவறி தண்டவாள சுற்றுச் சுவரில் இடித்து ஒரு பள்ளி மாணவன் இறக்கிறான். வழக்கமாக இரயில்வே போலீஸ் விசாரிக்கும் இந்த கேஸை விசாரிக்க மாநில குற்றத் தடுப்பு பிரிவிலிருந்து detective கார்த்திக் அல்டோ வருகிறார். அவரிடம் CCTV காட்சி ஒன்று காட்டப்படுகிறது. அதனை கண்டவுடன் அல்டோவிற்கு இந்த கேஸின் தீவிரம் புலப்படுகிறது - காரணம் - மாணவன் இறப்பதற்கு முன்பு அவனை ஷு அணிந்த கால் ஒன்று இடுப்பில் வலுவாக உதைத்திருந்தது. 

Template murder mystery எனினும் கொலையை stage செய்ய இரயிலை தேர்ந்தெடுத்ததால் diverse suspects - confined space என ஒரு interesting whodunit ஆக பயணிக்க எல்லா அம்சங்களும் அமையப் பெற்று தொடங்குகிறது இந்நாவல். விறுவிறுப்பான கதை நகர்வு, இறுதியில் வரும் revelation, கதையினூடே உரையாடல்களில் இடம்பெரும் அரசியல் நையாண்டி ஆகியவை plus. ஓரிரு அத்தியாயங்களின் ஆரம்பத்தில் வரும் trivia giveaway ஆக அமைவது minus.

இது நான் வாசித்த சென் பாலனின் முதல் நாவல். A passable read with no disappointments.

“The Perfect Son” by Freida McFadden

Erika Cass, a mother of two, confesses to murder in a police investigation. Who was the victim? Was she the real murderer or was she covering her son Liam? Only Erika knows her son’s hidden sociopathic tendencies and what her son is capable of. “The Perfect Son” wastes no time and moves straight into the narrative with this prologue. 

Liam takes interest in a girl from his class and when Erika learns about it, she knows it is going to be trouble. But, before she could react, the girl goes missing and Liam is the last person to see her alive. The novel explores the theme of sociopath vs psychopath with this premise with enough twists and turns to keep you hooked. 

With limited characters, Freida McFadden builds up the suspense in a manner that the novel sustains the momentum until the very end. Though we foresee the twist at the end, the pace at which the narrative unfolds makes us oversee this shortcoming. The novel is strewn with plot deflections which add to the mystery quotient but the novel never goes off track into the sidetracks. The multiple POV narrative makes the novel even more interesting with consistent high points.

Reminiscent of her previous novels, “The Perfect Son” also survives on the shock value with unsettling themes. Nevertheless, a worthy read!

John Grisham’s “The Exchange”

John Grisham’s “The Exchange” touted to be a sequel to his previous blockbuster novel “The Firm” starts off as a legal thriller and later shifts into an international suspense thriller involving an abduction. Mitch McDeere, the small town lawyer from “The Firm” returns in this novel as a partner in one of the top law firms - Scully and Pershing.

After the life threatening encounter with the Mob fifteen years ago, Mitch and his wife Abby have been living a normal life with their kids. Mitch is assigned a case which involves construction firm Lannak’s lawsuit against the Libyan government over unpaid dues for building a bridge in the middle of the desert. Luca Sandroni who was managing the case before, suffers from pancreatic cancer and his daughter Giovanna is chosen to work along with Mitch for Lannak. When Mitch and Giovanna decide to visit the bridge in Libya, Giovanna gets abducted and the security personnel accompanying her end up being brutally murdered on video. 

Who is behind the abduction? Is it the Libyan colonel? Is it Mitch’s past catching up with him? When they wait for an outfit or the people behind the abduction to make contact, Mitch’s wife Abby is being threatened with pictures of her family and a contact is made with a huge ransom demand. Abby is caught in the middle of a hostage negotiation as the kidnappers only communicate to Abby. Mitch and Abby try every possible source to come up with the ransom amount. Will they be able to rescue Giovanna alive with the clock ticking? Will they close in on the kidnappers?

A promising premise with a potential to become an engrossing international thriller is let down by tiresome sidetracks with very little action happening throughout. The hostage negotiation takes a backstage at one point and the side track involving the attempt to raise funds for the ransom takes center stage until it gets boring. By the time the novel gets back on track, it is too late. The unconvincing link up to “The Firm” at the end and an abrupt climax makes this novel a futile attempt at giving a sequel.
