A film stamped with honorary national award unveils a
sensitive social issue which just remains as a debatable topic in govt
offices, corporates and schools everyday. The film debates on sex
education to children in the foreground with religion, education system,
motherhood, anger and pity state of the have-nots in the background.
The film starts with isaignani ilayaraja's "Aaru athu
aazham illa" from mudhal vasantham and the lead lady's lyrical intro
comes up with "Aazham ethu ayyaa... Antha pombala manusu thaanyaa", an
intense intro. More metaphorical scenes are scattered throughout the
film. The lead lady's crime scene has valluvar's " oruthaarai vaiyaarae"
in the blackboard behind her - a masterclass scene. The lead lady's
realisation comes with a thaiyam drama playing in the surroundings and
the dramatic script has the situational dialogue - "Kutrra
unarchiyaanathu konjam konjamaaga kuththi kolai seiya, manasatchi
enbathu marathin meethaeri mattra paeigalai poal bayam kaata,
thavithanal, katharinal...".
Kannadasan's "Unnai kaetu ennai kaetu ethuvum nadakuma, antha oruthan nadathum naadagathai nirutha mudiyuma?" is placed at the perfect place. The film's poetic take on the issue reaches its peak with mahakavi's "Chinnachiru kiliyae", a beautiful rendition from music director Shankar Rengarajan.
Bramma builds his thoughts and ideas around the situations
and not the characters. Radhika as Merlin teacher and Master Ajay as Chezhiyan make the biggest impact. Bramma's communist shades peek in
here and there. The film ends with Maxim Garky's "Thaai" - a literary
work on the prelude to the Russian revolution. The film debates on the
necessity of sex education to children and condemns child abuse in due
course. A much needed film in recent times. The film does not preach, it
makes you think after the 2 hours. An intense film that makes your
heart heavy.
Bottomline - A film questioning the society!
