திரு. டி. செல்வராஜ் எழுதிய "தோல்"

டி. செல்வராஜ் எழுதிய "தோல்" எனும் நாவல் தோல் பதனிடும் தொழிலாளர்களின் வாழ்வியலை பதிவு செய்து, நம்மை அவர்களின் உலகுக்கு இழுத்துச் செல்கிறது. அடிமை வாழ்விலிருந்து விடுபட அதிகார வர்க்கத்திற்கு எதிராகவும், சாதிய அடக்குமுறைக்கு எதிராகவும் அறவழி போராட்டங்கள் மூலமாக எவ்வாறு தொழிலாளர்கள் தங்கள் அடிப்படை உரிமைகளை மீட்டெடுக்கின்றனர் என்பதே இந்நாவலின் மையக்கரு.

பல்வேறு ஊர்களிலிருந்து பிழைப்புக்காக வந்த மக்கள் முறி எழுதி கொடுத்து தோல் ஷாப்புகளில் சேர்வது வழக்கம். வாங்கிய கடனையும் அடைக்க முடியாமல், கூலி அனைத்தும் அன்றாட தேவைகளுக்கும், சாராயத்துக்கும் தீரும் நிலையில் வட்டியும் கட்ட முடியாமல், அடிமைகளாக மரணிப்பதே இவர்களின் வாழ்க்கை. சாராயம் அவர்கள் உடல் வலியைப் போக்கிக்கொள்ள அத்தியாவசியமாகிறது. தோல் பதனிடும் முறையால் அவர்கள் நோயுற்று மரணிப்பதும் சகஜமான ஒன்று. ஊருக்குள் மாடு செத்து விழுந்தால் வந்து தூக்க கீழ்சாதியினரே பணிக்கப்படுவர். தோல் ஷாப்புத் தொழிலாளர்களும் அதே சாதியினர் தான். வர்க்க பேதம், சாதிய அடக்குமுறை இரண்டையும் இம்மக்கள் அனுபவிக்கும் அவலம். தீண்டாமையின் உச்சமாக காற்று கூட சேரியின் வாயிலாக போகாமல் ஊருக்குள் வருமளவுக்கான திட்டமிடல் ஊரையும் சேரியையும் பிரிப்பதில் இருந்திருக்கிறது.

தோல் ஷாப் ஒன்றில் அபலைப் பெண்ணை பாலியல் ரீதியாக துன்புறுத்தும் முதலாளியின் மைத்துனனை ஓசேப்பு எனும் தொழிலாளி தாக்குகிறான். முதலாளியின் அடியாட்கள் அவனைத் தேட ஆரம்பிக்க, வெளியூருக்கு தப்பிச்  செல்ல எத்தனித்து ஓசேப்பு இரயில் நிலையத்தின் பொது கழிப்பறையில் மறைகிறான். பராமரிப்பில்லாத அந்த கழிவறையில் தேங்கி நிற்கும் மலத்தை சாக்கடையில் இருந்து வெளிவந்த பன்றி சுவைக்கிறது. அந்த காட்சியும், அந்த நாற்றமும் அவனை வெளியே துரத்தியிருக்க வேண்டும். அது தான் வாசகனின் எதிர்ப்பார்ப்பும். ஆனால், மலக்கழிவின் வாடை குடலைப் பிடுங்கினாலும், தோல் ஷாப்பின் ரத்தம் கலந்த நிணக்கழிவின் அழுகல் வாடையை விட மோசமாக அவனுக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. இந்த ஒரு காட்சி தோல் ஷாப்பு வேலையின் கடினத்தையும், கொடூரத்தையும் விளக்கி நம்மை கலங்கடிக்கிறது. 

அடியாட்களிடம் பிடிபடும் ஓசேப்புக்கு ஆதரவாக வரும் கிருத்துவ பாதிரியாருடன் சேர்ந்து தொழிலாளர்கள் திரள்வதே தங்கள் முதலாளிகளுக்கெதிராக அவர்கள் எழுப்பும் முதல் குரல். தோல் ஷாப்பில் நடக்கும் உழைப்புச் சுரண்டலுக்கும், பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தலுக்கும் எதிராக குரல் கொடுக்கும் தொழிலாளர்களை ஒன்றிணைக்க தொழிற்சங்க அமைப்புகள் உருவாகின்றன. அவை அவர்களின் ஊதிய உயர்வு, முறி ரத்து ஆகியவையோடு அவர்கள் சுயமரியாதையையும் மீட்டெடுக்க உதவுகின்றன. அனைவரும் ஒரு அமைப்பாய் அதிகார அத்துமீறல்களையும் மீறி முதலாளித்துவத்தையும், சாதிய முரணையும் சட்டத்தின் துணை நின்று எவ்வாறு எதிர்கொள்கின்றனர் என்பதே நாவல் நெடுக பரவிக் கிடக்கிறது.

உயர்சாதி வக்கீல் சங்கரன், சுப்புவாடன் போன்ற துப்புரவு பணியாளர்கள், ஓசேப்பு போன்ற தோல் ஷாப் பணியாளர்கள் சங்கத்தில் இணைந்த பிறகு அவர்களுள் நிகழும் உளவியல் ரீதியான மாற்றங்களை பற்றிய விவரணை தொழிற்சங்கங்களின் பலத்தை பிரதிபலிக்கிறது. அனைவரையும் சமமாய் பார்த்தும் சேரி தெருவின் சகதிக்காடான நிலை, தோல் பதனிடும் மற்றும் மலம் அள்ளும் பணியாளர்கள் மீது வீசும் நாற்றம், அவர்களின் அழுக்குத் தோற்றம் அனைத்துக்கும் பழக சங்கரனுக்கு காலம் தேவைப்டுகிறது. சுப்புவாடன் போன்ற துப்புரவு தொழிலாளர்கள் தங்கள் சாதியின் விளைவாக வரும் தாழ்வு மனப்பான்மையிலிருந்து வெளிவர முடியாமல் சமூகத்தில் நிலவும் சாதிய கட்டமைப்பு தடுக்கிறது. ஆயிரமாயிரம் வருடங்களாக இவ்விருவர் நடுவே உடைபடாத மதில்களை "தோழர்" என்ற ஒற்றைச் சொல் உடைத்தெரிகிறது. 

நாவலில் தனிமனித நாயக சாகசங்கள் ஏதும் இடம்பெறாது, உண்மைக்கு நெருக்கமாக, உணர்வு பூர்வமாக அமைகிறது கதையின் போக்கு. தொழிலாளர்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட அமைப்பே நாவலின் நாயகன், அமைப்புக்கான கொள்கையின் துணையோடு நடத்தப்படும் சட்ட போராட்டங்களே சாகசங்கள்.

பொதுவுடைமை இயக்கங்களின் தேவையை உணர்த்தும் இந்நாவல் பல இடங்களில் மாக்ஸிம் கார்கியின் "தாய்" நாவலை நினைவூட்டுகிறது.

சிவசங்கரியின் "பாலங்கள்"

சிவசங்கரியின் "பாலங்கள்" வெவ்வேறு காலக்கட்டங்களில் வாழும் மூன்று பெண்களை முதன்மை கதாப்பாத்திரங்களாக கொண்டு பயணிக்கிறது. ஒவ்வொரு காலக்கட்டத்திலும் பெண்களின் மனநிலையையும், அவர்களின் குடும்ப சூழலையும், பெண்கள் மீது சமூகம் விதிக்கும் கட்டுப்பாடுகளையும், உடை, உணவு, கல்வி, வேலைவாய்ப்பு, விருப்பம், திருமணம் போன்றவற்றில் அவர்களுக்கிருந்த சுதந்திரத்தின் எல்லையையும் இந்த மூன்று பெண்களின் வாயிலாக பதிவு செய்கிறது. நீண்ட கால மூடநம்பிக்கைகள், சம்பிரதாயங்கள், சாதிய வழக்கங்கள் நிறுவிச் செல்லும் பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தை, அதன் தீவிரத்தை அந்தந்த காலக்கட்டத்தின் சமூக எதார்த்தத்தோடு விவரிக்கிறது இந்நாவல். 

பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தையே வாழ்க்கை நெறியென நம்பி அறியாமையாலும், சமூக கண்ணோட்டத்தாலும், சாதிய வழக்கங்களாலும் அந்த வாழ்வை ஏற்றுக் கொள்பவளாய் சிவகாமு. பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தின் சங்கிலியை உடைத்து, தனது விருப்பங்களை தெரிவிக்கும் வாய்ப்புகள் இருந்தும், குடும்பத்தின் வற்புறுத்தலால் கல்வி முதல் கொண்டு அனைத்தையும் விட்டு, வேறு வழியின்றி வந்த வாழ்வை ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவளாய் மைதிலி. பெண் அடிமைச் சங்கிலியை உடைத்து, கல்வியில் சிறந்து, விருப்பு வெறுப்புகளுக்கு ஏற்ப சுதந்திரமாய் முடிவுகள் எடுப்பவளாய் இருந்தும் ஆணாதிக்கத்தால் தனது சுதந்திரத்திற்கும் எல்லையுண்டு என்பதை உணர்ந்தவளாய் சாரு. 

சாதியப் படிநிலையிலும் அடிமையாய் தான் பெண்கள் இடம்பெற்றனர். அதிலும் இந்நாவல் உயர் சாதி பெண்களை பற்றிய விவரனை. அப்படி இருக்கையில் சாதியப் படிநிலையின் அடிமட்டத்தில் உள்ள சாதியைச் சார்ந்த பெண்கள் சாதி ரீதியான அடிமைத்தனத்தோடு பெண் அடிமைத்தனத்தையும் அனுபவிக்கும் அவலம் தான்.

சிவகாமு, மைதிலி, சாரு ஆகிய மூவரின் கதைகளிலுமே மூன்று தலைமுறை பெண்கள் இடம்பெறுகின்றனர். தனக்கு முந்தைய தலைமுறைக்கும், அடுத்த தலைமுறைக்கும் உள்ள கலாச்சார மாறுதல்களையும், அதனால் ஏற்படும் சச்சரவுகளையும் சமாளித்து இருவரையும் ஒரே கூரையில் வாழ வழிவகுக்கும் பாலங்களாய் இம்மூன்று பெண்கள் அமைகின்றனர் என்பதை மிளிரும் மொழிநடையில் இந்நாவல் விவரிக்கிறது.

திரு. அஜயன் பாலா எழுதிய "நாயகன் சே குவாரா"

திரு.அஜயன் பாலாவின் "நாயகன்" வரிசையில் சே குவாரா பற்றிய புத்தகம் இன்று படித்தேன். 

சே குவாராவின் வாழ்வில் நிகழ்ந்த முக்கிய தருணங்களை திரட்டி இந்நூல் ஒரு சிறிய வாழ்க்கைத் தொகுப்பாக அமைந்திருக்கிறது. சகல வசதிகளுடன் உயர் வகுப்பை சார்ந்த குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்தாலும், அவர் எவ்வாறு உழைக்கும் மக்களுக்கான புரட்சியாளராய் உருவெடுத்தார் என்று உளவியல் ரீதியாகவும், அவருடைய தனிப்பட்ட அனுபவங்களின் மூலமாகவும் விவரிக்கிறது இந்நூல்.

அவருடைய நண்பர்கள் சிறு வயதிலேயே உழைக்கும் வர்க்கத்தை சார்ந்தவர்களாக இருந்ததின் விளைவாக தொழிலாளர் நலனைப் பற்றிய சிந்தனையும் அவருடன் சேர்ந்தே வளர்ந்தது. ஒரு மனிதனை அவன் வாழ்கின்ற சூழல், அவன் மீது வைக்கப்படும் விமர்சனங்கள், அவன் மேற்கொள்ளும் பயணங்கள், அந்த பயணங்களில் அவன் சந்திக்கும் மனிதர்களின் நிலை ஆகியவை ஏற்படுத்தும் தாக்கத்திற்கு சே குவாராவின் வாழ்வு ஓர் உதாரணம். தன்னலமின்றி, தன் நாடு - பிற நாடு என்னும் பாகுபாடின்றி பிறர் நாட்டு சுதந்திரத்திற்குப் போராடிய புரட்சியாளனை மக்களிடம் இந்நூல் சேர்க்கும்.

சே குவாரா யார் என்று தெரியாமலே அவரது படம் போட்ட டீசர்ட்டை அணிந்தவர்களில் நானும் ஒருவன் - ஒரு சிவப்பு நிற டீசர்ட் அணிந்து அலைந்தவன் தான். அந்த டீசர்ட்டில் ஓவியமாகத் தோன்றிய சே அவர்கள் அதிகாரத்திற்கு எதிரான குரலின் அடையாளம் என்றும், அமெரிக்க ஏகாதிபத்தியத்தியத்தை எதிர்க்கும் குறியீடு என்றும் நான் அறிந்ததில்லை. அப்படிப்பட்ட சே குவாராவை இந்த நூல் எனக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்தது. 

அஜயன் பாலா அவர்களின் எழுத்தில் உள்ள எளிமையும், வரலாற்றுப் பக்கங்களை விவரிக்கும் போது கொண்டு வரும் சுவாரஸ்யமும் நாயகன் வரிசை மூலம் பல ஆளுமைகளை மக்களிடம் எளிதாய் சேர்க்கும்.

Lucy Foley’s “The Guest List”

Lucy Foley‘s “The Guest List” is a taut thriller which keeps the readers guessing until the very end. With a group of guests assembled at a high profile wedding in a remote island, the proceedings take a wild turn when a waitress suspects she has seen a body along the shoreline.

The novel shifts back and forth in time to cover the events that happened on the day before the wedding and on the wedding day. This non-linear writing is a great strength to the novel despite being abrupt at certain places. The events unfold before us from each character’s perspective and each character has a backstory which is seamlessly interwoven into the plot. 

We have the formulaic murder mysteries which start with the murder victim and build up to the revelation of the murderer and the motive in the climax. This novel stands apart and keeps the victim as well under wraps and leaves the readers  in intriguing suspense. 

Verity by Colleen Hoover

Lowen, a writer, who is almost broke, lands up with the best offer in her lifetime - to finish the series of best-selling author Verity. Lowen stumbles upon a draft of Verity’s autobiography during the research for the novel and it unearths more mysteries surrounding Verity’s medical condition and the death of Verity’s daughters. As these mysteries unfold, the suspense builds up and the novel keeps us engrossed.

Verity, the protagonist’s character arc is well written and the story depends heavily on this character to move forward. Jeremy, Verity’s husband is a weakly written character despite being the character that is linked to all high points in the novel and travels throughout the length of the novel. Lowen, as a writer who has a secret past and her fear for public / social appearances is a better written character. 

The climactic ending to the novel is great but the novel has its share of shortcomings in the build up to the climax where a lot of unnecessary scenes disturb the flow. The negative shade of Verity is brilliantly written and propels the narration forward. But the wrongdoings of Jeremy and Lowen are silenced at most parts and end up being justified and we wonder whether that was intentional or inadvertent.

Despite the shortcomings, this served just as the satisfactory read to come out of the reading slump. 

Dr. Ambedkar Birth Anniversary 2022 - Equality day

The struggle for Indian independence is taught in schools - the history of independence movement and the sacrifice of the leaders is well-known to the students.

Similarly, the struggle for social freedom in India has a long history. This struggle against the social structure of caste needs to be reiterated in the history books. The ignorance and preconceived notion around reservation needs to be cleared. The thought of taking pride in one's caste needs to be deemed unjust and how this pride impacts the mental health of fellow human beings from lower castes needs to be pointed out. The tense situation that engulfs a society whenever there is a caste feud has its roots in ignorance and the unnecessary pride.

Dr. Ambedkar - the undeniable force that broke the caste shackles of the society to attain social freedom needs a special place in the school history books. His exhaustive research work on annihilation of caste is what the future society needs. 

Let us follow his footsteps and work together for the ideal casteless society built on Equality, Fraternity and Liberty.

Remembering Bhagat Singh on his death anniversary - 23 March 2022

An individual who stood by his principles even when facing the gallows. An avid reader who spent most of his short lived life in the midst of books. A revolutionary who stood against imperialism and made the voice of socialism reverberate across the country. An atheist who believed in rationalism and questioned the fallacy of age old beliefs. An extremist who valued human life and never believed in bloodshed unlike the pistol brandishing angry young man image portrayed by many. A freedom fighter who could have been the socialist icon India needed if not for the unjust trial and death sentence. 

A personality who should be studied and celebrated more!
